Zoney Carpenter

Zoney G. Carpenter, 69, of Sulphur Springs, died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Heartland of Bucyrus following a lengthy heart condition.

He was born March 9, 1945 in Vanceburg, Ky. to the late William and Evia (Dyer) Carpenter. Zoney learned the value of hard work at the young age of ten, working for a local junkyard. From this, he earned enough money to buy a ’57 Chevy and a short time later moved to Bucyrus. He worked a couple jobs before being hired at Tecumseh in Marion where he worked 15 years until they closed. Zoney then worked for Pacal Blades in Bucyrus for several years until his retirement.

Zoney married Bonnie Stiefel in 1965 and they enjoyed many family get-togethers and countless garage sale adventures. He was gifted mechanically, especially when it came to working on motors. Whether on a car, appliance or lawn mower, Zoney knew how to keep things running. In fact, he was known as the neighborhood repairman and, if he ever got in a pinch, he had his granddaughter there for assistance. He enjoyed tinkering with whatever he could find and being outdoors where he could cut wood until his health no longer permitted him to do so. When not on the go, he could be found in front of the TV watching one of his favorite shows, Bonanza, Gunsmoke or The Price is Right while drinking a cup of coffee.

Some of his other hobbies through the years have been hunting, fishing and camping. Zoney also loved riding his various motorcycles and found bluegrass music relaxing as well as working jigsaw puzzles with his granddaughter.

In addition to his wife of 49 years, he is survived by three children, Nicki (Ken) Jones of LaRue, Matthew Carpenter of Sulphur Springs and Luke (Jessica Wade) Carpenter of Bucyrus; three grandchildren, Liberty Carpenter, Brandon Wade and Kwanita Whitehair; five siblings, Myrtle Hobbs of Vanceburg, Violet Dulen of Tipp City, Ohio, Irene Cooley of Maysville, Ky., Liz (Wayne) McGlone and Charlie Carpenter both of Bucyrus and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by two children, William Gayle Carpenter and Lisa Carpenter along with several siblings and in-laws.

Funeral services will be held at Wise Funeral Service on Saturday, October 11 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Carl Angel officiating. The Carpenter family will receive friends two hours prior to the service, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
