Wilbert Franklin Peterman, 82, of Bucyrus died early Saturday morning, August 30, 2014 at Heartland of Bucyrus where he was rehabilitating from recent illness.
Better known as Pete (or Frank to his immediate family), he was born September 29, 1931 in Jefferson Twp., Crawford County to the late Bert and Laura (Harriger) Peterman. His mother was canning peaches the day he was born and he has kept one of those jars his entire life. He learned the value of hard work being raised on a family farm and he attended North Robinson and Mt. Zion Schools before he began working for Wilson Dairy. He was introduced to Marilyn Hollenbaugh by their friends, Gale and Mary Ann Ruth. A courtship ensued and Pete and Marilyn were married from February 20, 1955 until she preceded him in death on July 2, 2013.
Pete was a man of determination with a work ethic second-to-none. He and Marilyn epitomized the American dream of starting with very little, working very hard and making a living in order to raise family and make a good home. Never one for sports, TV or being idle, work was Pete’s hobby as he worked for Nigh Builders for 22 years and Bucyrus Community Hospital for 16 years, all while doing side jobs of renovations and upgrades for local home owners. If he couldn’t fix something himself, he knew the person who could. As a child of the depression, nothing was wasted and everything was taken care of.
Pete was an active member of Good Hope Lutheran Church, serving for a number of years on the property care committee. He also enjoyed fishing on occasion and taking his family camping when they were younger. Later, Pete and Marilyn looked forward to Saturday and Sunday drives to nowhere in particular and they were fortunate enough to travel to Europe and much of the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. They also went to various community gatherings, Bucyrus Little Theater productions, CCCCA concerts and Relay for Life and other Cancer Awareness fundraisers.
Pete is survived by his children, Becky (Timothy) Wilson of Marengo and Randall “Randy” Franklin Peterman of Concord, N.C.; three grandchildren, Thomas Franklin Wilson, Bailey Delaine Peterman and Donald Franklin Peterman and a number of nieces, nephews and their families.
In addition to his parents and wife of 58 years, Pete was preceded in death by brothers, Robert, Edward, Delbert, Kenneth, Waine and Gilbert Peterman and sister, Marie Pritchard.
The Peterman family will receive friends on Thursday, September 4, from 5-8 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus and from 10-11 a.m. Friday at Good Hope Lutheran Church where his funeral will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor David Bliss officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
