Warren R. Miller

Warren R. Miller, 89, of Bucyrus, died Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Bucyrus Community Hospital.

He was born June 15, 1922 in Crawford County to the late Ray and Minnie (Spiegel) Miller. Warren graduated from Mt. Zion High School in 1940 and served in the US Army from 1945 to 1946. Warren married Marilyn Elizabeth Hilyard in 1945 and they shared 36 wonderful years together before her death in 1981.

Growing up in a farming family, Warren knew the value of hard work and working with what you had. He enjoyed quoting to his grandkids, “A wolf that will waste is a wolf that will want.” and Warren lived by this motto. In 1959, he took the advice and assistance of the late Walter Clady and purchased a paint and wallpaper store in Galion. This was the beginning of Miller’s Paint and Wallpaper; a business that was his life and one of his greatest accomplishments. He cared for the community’s painting and wallpaper needs until he retired in 1989. Warren moved to Bucyrus after his marriage to Mary Robinson who also preceded him in death.

Warren believed in supporting and giving back to the community. He was a longtime member of the Galion Lions Club where he had served as President; Galion Athletic Boosters; Crawford County Fair Board; Bucyrus Salvation Army Advisory Board and the former Y’s Men organization, where he met Margaret Ann (Montague) Myers. They married in 1993 and have spent 18 fun and adventurous years together. Shortly after their marriage, they were vacationing in Aspen, Colo. where Warren decided to take skiing lessons at the age of 72. He had never skied before and was the oldest student in the class but he was proud to have earned the Skier of the Week Award.

Church was an important part of Warren’s life, starting at Mt. Zion UMC at the age of 2. While living in Galion, he attended St. Paul UMC where he was a member of the L.H.O. Class. When he moved back to Bucyrus he attended Grace UMC where he enjoyed his time with other members in the Ever-Faithful Sunday School Class.

In addition to his wife, Margaret Ann, Warren is survived by two children, Kathy (Mike) Price of Galion and Chuck (Lynne) Miller of Bucyrus; seven grandchildren, Melanie (Brett) Griffin of Huntersville, NC, Beth Ann (Chris) Bailey of Shaker Heights, Molly Bell of Mansfield, Jeff (Angie) Skinner of Bucyrus, Marc (Catherine) Skinner of Washington State, Sara (Dave) Baumgartner of Ashland and David (Jenna) Miller of Columbus; 10 great grandchildren, Ella, Rowan, Paige, Charlotte, Lucy, Morgan, Hannah, Ian, Leah and Isaac; two brothers, Wilbur (Dorothy) Miller and Alvin (Jackie) Miller, both of Bucyrus and four step-children, Tim, Randy, Jamie, and Mary Ellen Myers. Warren is preceded in death by a son, Mike Miller and two brothers, Carl and James Miller. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday, December 30 at Wise Funeral Service and from 10-12 noon Saturday at Bucyrus United Methodist Church (corner of Warren and Walnut Streets in Bucyrus) where funeral services will be held at 12 noon Saturday with Pastor Mike Corwin officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with full military rites provided by the US Army and Am. Legion, Post 181 Honor Guards. The Salvation Army was an important ministry to Warren, therefore a red barrel will be at the calling hours and funeral where friends may place a non-perishable can or box of food for the food pantry. Memorial contributions may be given to the Bucyrus UMC, Salvation Army or a charity of the donor’s choice through the funeral home.
