Warren E. Lutz

Warren E. Lutz, 91, of Bucyrus died Thursday, November 28, 2013 at Maplecrest Assisted Living in Bucyrus.

He was born March 28, 1922 to the late Dale and Bertha (Clary) Lutz on the family farm in Bucyrus Twp. He went to school at Mt. Zion, graduating in 1941 then joined his dad in farming and also worked part-time for Nigh Builders. Warren was competitive in any game or sport he played, and in 1947 Dale introduced him to the game of bowling at Mary Street Lanes. Thus began a passion that would last for decades and lead to a large collection of memorabilia including carving a tree stump on his property into a pin. In 1961, he was bowling at Suburban Lanes (where he was on original investor) with his friend, Warren Quaintance, when they met two teachers who had moved to Bucyrus after college, Mary Kettler and Barb Pittman. A brief courtship ensued and Warren and Mary Lutz were married December 23, 1961. Warren and Barb Quaintance would later marry as well. Mary preceded him in death June 1, 1993.

Warren will be remembered as an easygoing man of few words who was always on time. He saw to it that things were well taken care of on the farm and he enjoyed following his family and friends in high school sports, especially the Wynford Royals with which he had a lifetime pass. He also loved to travel which coincided well with his bowling. He visited all 48 continental states and bowled in 32 American Bowling Congress (ABC) tournaments, finishing as high as 6th in 1959. He bowled in 17 of the first 18 Bill Rahm Invitationals, winning the 2nd in 1966 and 12th in 1976 and bowled his only 300 Game in the 1977 Rahm.

In addition to bowling, Warren was a poll worker and presiding judge for the Board of Elections; active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus where he served on Church Council, Sunday School President and played on the Dartball team.

Warren is survived by two children, Craig (Lisa) Lutz of Bucyrus and Kristine (Peter) Conces of Aurora; three granddaughters, Kayla Lutz and Alexandra and Olivia Conces; three step granddaughters, Marie, Nikki and Sarah Cichanowicz; sisters-in-law, Lois Lutz and Frances (Robert) Graber along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife of 31 years, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Clifford and Russell Lutz, Evelyn Shifley and an infant brother.

The Lutz family will receive friends Tuesday, December 3 from 4-7 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bucyrus with Pastor Don L. Neumann officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
