Wallace Johnson

Wallace Johnson, 91, of Bucyrus went home to be with the Lord on May 9, 2012 after a prolonged illness.

He was born January 24, 1921 in Webb, W.Va. to the late Haden and Inez (Bowen) Johnson.

Wallace served in the U.S. Army during World War II helping people. He worked in the 130th Station Hospital in England and France carrying the wounded from the transports to the operating rooms, then to their beds. He served from August 1942 to November 1945.

He married Verna Crum, who survives, on May 16, 1946 sharing nearly 66 years of marriage. They had three daughters, Hazel (stillborn), Pauline Dennis and Rachel Wion, both of Bucyrus.

In addition to his parents and daughter, he was preceded in death by sons-in-law, Cecil Dennis and George Wion, four brothers, two sisters and all of their spouses except one sister-in-law, Francis Johnson of Webb.

He is also survived by his grandchildren and their families, Gregory and April Chance of Mundelein, Ill., Traci and Charles Spicer of Cincinnati, John Wion and April Osborn of Carrollton, Texas, Nicholas and Laurel Wion of Cleveland, Wayne and Estrella Dennis of Kansas City, Mo., Mark Dennis of Hardy, Ky. and Gregg Dennis of Kansas City. He had numerous nieces and nephews and was also deeply loved by all the members of Verna's family.

Wallace retired from the Norfolk and Southern Railroad in 1986 after 30 years as a laborer. He was a member of the Bucyrus Freewill Baptist Church.

Wallace enjoyed spending time with his family, going to church and reminiscing about the past with family and friends. When he was younger, he loved working in his garden, going to the Bratwurst Festival and cleaning up the papers and cans as he walked around Lions Field for exercise.

He was a quiet man with a simple dignity who, by his presence, made you proud to be his friend. He will be missed by his family and all who knew him.

The Johnson family will receive friends Sunday, May 13 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus where the funeral will be held Monday at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites provided by the U.S. Army.
