Violet Mary Wingate, 82, died peacefully Thursday, September 9, 2021 at her home under the care of her family and OhioHealth Hospice.
She was born in Bucyrus on December 27, 1938 to the late Alfred V. and Rose K. (Ruffner) Rossman. After graduating from Bucyrus High School in 1956, she attended Capital University until her beauty caught the eye of Dan Wingate in downtown Bucyrus. He swept her off her feet and they were married June 16, 1957. Mr. Wingate survives after 64 years of marriage. Vi worked as a homemaker and as a bookkeeper for both Dan Wingate Ford and Office Depot in Marion before her retirement.
Family was everything to Vi. She was the consummate caregiver to her immediate and extended family. She was also an excellent gardener with beautiful flower gardens, did a lot of sewing, enjoyed the company of many dachshunds over the years, and was a voracious reader with a book always close by. She and Dan enjoyed square dancing and playing cards with family and friends. Vi was a lifelong member of Good Hope Lutheran Church, member of the former Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #3, and Friends of the Bucyrus Library. Vi and Dan were blessed to travel together and with their family with trips to Disney and a recent overnight stay in a Yurt at The Wilds being especially memorable.
In addition to her husband, Vi is survived by daughters, Lorraine Wingate Betz and Phyllis J. Wingate; grandsons, Matthew Wingate Betz (wife, Kendrah) and Timothy James Betz-Small (wife, Ambria); as well as numerous cousins and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law, James Edward Betz; and, in July of this year, by her brother, A. Raymond Rossman, who lived in Orange Park, Florida.
Services for Vi will be held on Monday, September 13 at Good Hope Lutheran Church. Family will receive friends from 10-11:50 am and her funeral will begin at 12 Noon with Pastor Tanyce Addison officiating. A private burial in Oakwood Cemetery will be held later.
Contributions can be made payable to Humane Society Serving Crawford County or Good Hope Lutheran Window Fund and given at the church or Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Memories and photos can be shared on Vi’s Tribute Wall.
