Thomas P. Thatcher, 68, of rural Bucyrus died Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain, Ohio where he was hospitalized after a recent illness.
Tom was born September 19, 1945 in Bucyrus to the late T.W. and Helen (Schell) Thatcher, both longtime Crawford County educators. His maternal grandparents, LeRoy and Mary Schell were also significant in his upbringing. He graduated from Col. Crawford High School and The Ohio State University where he majored in Business. Tom worked in Real Estate and farming, becoming acquainted with a number of people over the years.
In 1969, Tom was introduced to the former Carolyn Schaaf while working in Sandusky. After dating on and off for five years, he and Carolyn were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus on October 5, 1974. Tom semi-retired from real estate after the closure of Rindfuss Realty, but continued to farm the land acquired by his family as a homestead in the 1800s.
Though sociable when he was out and about, Tom will be remembered as a private person who was very focused. He saw that the physical appearance of the farm was kept up and was meticulous about the maintenance of equipment. Tom couldn’t do without his television, especially The Weather Channel forecast and OSU football. He also enjoyed feeding birds, watching wildlife, and reading farm magazines and James Patterson novels. Tom and Carolyn had the privilege of traveling throughout the U.S. and Canada. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and was a member of the Bucyrus Shrine Club.
Tom is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carolyn Thatcher and two stepchildren, Daniel Strohl of Upper Arlington and Susan Strohl of Sequim, Wash. In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by his stepson, Mark Strohl and daughter-in-law, Pat Strohl.
Friends are encouraged to attend his Graveside Funeral Service on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Kocsis officiating.
