Thelma V. Mutchler

Thelma V. Mutchler, 88, passed away peacefully January 20, 2022 in the company of her family at Altercare of Bucyrus.

She was born September 5, 1933, to the late Alfred L. and Mary I. (Cotsmire) Stoneman, in New Winchester where she grew up and maintained lifetime friendships with her four closest friends. Thelma was Whetstone High School’s Valedictorian in 1951. She worked in Bucyrus briefly before taking a secretarial position at Hercules (later, Peabody) in Galion for 15 years. She then worked for Crawford County Fire Insurance and was named by the Bucyrus Business & Professional Women as “Woman of the Year” in 1973. This is also where she met Dwight L. Mutchler. They were married April 14, 1973 and he preceded her in death in 2006.

Thelma was raised in the New Winchester EUB where she later taught Sunday School and served as Youth Director. After its closure in the 1970s, Thelma attended Woodlawn UMC. Many will remember Thelma as a gifted baker and cake decorator. She made countless cakes for birthdays, weddings, and other events. She was an avid Cleveland Indians fan and had fond memories of taking trains to see them play in her younger years. She also enjoyed OSU basketball, solving crossword puzzles, making caramel corn, and catching up with friends over the phone. Thelma loved family visits and was pleased to attend her granddaughter’s recent wedding.

Thelma is survived by her son, Tim (Brenda) Mutchler; grandchildren, Hannah (Levi) Schafer and Spencer Mutchler; stepdaughter, Judy (Ron) Booth; stepdaughter-in-law, Judy Mutchler; the families of her stepchildren; and lifelong friends, Evelyn, Esther, and Eileen.

In addition to her parents and husband of 33 years, she was preceded in death by stepson, Bill Mutchler; stepdaughters, Bonnie (Charles) Foos and Joanne (Don) Ryland; and her dear friend, Marvel.

Services will take place on Monday, January 24 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Family will receive friends from 11 am – 12:55 pm and her funeral will begin at 1:00 pm with Pastor Sean McLeod officiating. Burial will follow in Sixteen Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made payable to Woodlawn UMC and will be designated to the work of the deacons. Memories and photos can be shared on Thelma’s Tribute Wall.
