Sylvester "Ves" Johnson

Ves Johnson, 86, of Bucyrus, died Thursday, December 15, 2022 at Orchard Park following a decline in health.

He was born October 7, 1936 in Kenton, Ohio to the late William and Louise (Sheldon) Johnson and was a 1956 graduate of Hardin Northern High School. On April 13, 1958, he married Patricia M. Baker and in 1959, Ves’ job with the railroad brought them to Bucyrus. He worked the railroad for several years and also had some other employment before he and Pat opened A-1 Printing in 1983. Together, they grew their business to a multi-location operation, which sold in 2002 after retirement.

Ves was a longtime Nazarene and worshipped in Marion, Bucyrus and lastly in Crestline. He was proud to have served as a Navy Reserve and was a member of the Bucyrus Kiwanis Club. Ves served on the board of directors for the Bucyrus Salvation Army, American Red Cross and the Bucyrus Chamber of Commerce. When Ves did find some time to unwind, he enjoyed fishing and shared many trips to Canada with family and friends over the years.

Ves is survived by a son, Bruce (Leslie) Johnson of Bucyrus. He was preceded in death by his wife Pat who died on October 7, 2016; three sons, Bert, Keith and Kevin Johnson; two brothers, Ronald and Kenneth Johnson and three sisters, Rosella Johnson, Elaine Miller and Margaret Chamberlain.

Calling hours for Ves will be held from 5-7 pm Wednesday, December 21 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus, where his funeral will be held at 11:00 am Thursday with Pastor Robert Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in Dunkirk Cemetery in Dunkirk, Ohio.

If desired, donations can be made payable to the Bucyrus Salvation Army or to a charity of the donor’s choice. These gifts will be accepted through the funeral home and expressions of sympathy can be shared on his tribute wall.
