Susan Laird Carter

Susan Laird Carter, 60, of Pulaski, Virginia, formerly of Bucyrus, passed Friday morning, May 30, 2014 at LewisGale Hospital in Pulaski.

She was born July 22, 1953 in Marion, Ohio to the late Edwin and Lucy (Saxton) Laird. The Laird family moved to Bucyrus and Susan graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1971. She received a degree in business administration from Marion Business College.  Her career in the newspaper industry began in sales and she earned her way to Publisher.   Her leadership experiences included Newslife, Telegraph-Forum and most recently, The Southwest Times in Pulaski, Va.  Her work was very important and, some would say, defined her. She was loved and admired by her staff at each paper she managed and will be missed by many. Sue met Thomas Carter in Virginia and they were married June 24, 2012.

Susan will be remembered as determined and gifted, whose impeccable work ethic, compassion and love for people was passed on to her daughters. She knew Jesus as her Lord and Savior and held strong convictions, yet she was one who lived and let live. Sue loved her dog Izzy, who became queen of their castle.  Most of all, she loved her children and grandchildren. When they visited her in Virginia, she liked to take them shopping, to the movies, boating and share funny family stories.  She was even looking forward to imparting her love of the thrill for roller coasters to her grandchildren this summer.

Sue is survived by her husband, Tom Carter; her best friend and sister, Kathy Laird; two daughters, Crystle (Bill) Stephenson and Kimberly Goyer; two step-children, Brandi Zelaya and John Carter; and five grandchildren, Megan, Brooke, Reegyn, Desmond and Tanner.  Sue also had a deep love for all her nieces and nephews and remained in close contact with her nephew, Adam Dye and niece, Cynthia (Nick) Love.

In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her beloved son, Michael Taylor; sister, Janet Greene, and brother, Richard Wilson.

Friends and family are invited to gather for a graveside funeral service in Oakwood Cemetery on Thursday, June 5 at 12:30 p.m. with Pastor Manzo Surgener officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in honor of the Michael Taylor Foundation.  This foundation was established to help those in Crawford County who have been affected by an unexpected tragedy or life event. This foundation will assist with unexpected medical bills, funeral expenses, children’s needs, etc. Donations can be sent to Wise Funeral Service, 129 West Warren St., Bucyrus, OH 44820, and made to either Crystle Stephenson or Kimberly Goyer.  Please note “Michael Taylor Foundation” on the subject line.  Memories are encouraged in the Memorial Guestbook below.
