Steve Blankenship, 62, of Bucyrus, died Tuesday, October 31, 2023 at his home following a decline in health.
Steve was born on January 21, 1961 in Bucyrus to the late Aaron “Hiway” and Sandra Kaye (Powers) Blankenship. He attended Bucyrus High School and then took a job in telecommunications, where he installed central office telephone equipment. Steve had a passion for fishing which led to him becoming a First Mate and working for his uncle Ed at Chelsea Charters.
When you saw Steve, you were most likely greeted with his “peace sign” as his way of saying hello. He was a laid-back individual who often kept to himself; however, he did enjoy time spent with family and friends. He enjoyed picking on his nieces and nephew and tried to be the best he could for them. In his healthier years, he enjoyed hunting deer as well as small game and he also maintained a rather large garden. His biggest hobby was fishing and he loved rooting for his Cincinnati Bengals while enjoying a cold Busch beer. He had a big heart for animals and had gotten a cat for one of his nieces. That didn’t work out, so he took the cat back and following the loss of his mom, that four-legged feline provided him a great amount of comfort and companionship.
Steve is survived by sisters, Dianne (Tom) Alberty and Deborah Rupert; brother-in-law, Roger Lahman; aunt, Ellen Powers; nieces and nephew, Teena Alberty, Tom Alberty, Cassandra (Dominic) Wiparina, Kayce Hahn, Lauren Lahman and Lacey Lahman as well as great nieces and nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his dad and mom, Hiway and Sandra Blankenship; sister, Rhonda Sue Lahman; brother-in-law, Charles Rupert and his uncle, Ed Powers.
Though no public services will be held for Steve, family and friends are encouraged to raise a glass and make a toast to the times had with him. Expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared in his guestbook.
