Skipp Jones, 59, of Loudonville and longtime Bucyrus resident, died Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center in Ashland after being treated for recent heart issues.
He was born Herbert R. Jones, Jr. in Bucyrus on September 20, 1958 to Herb Sr. and Doris (Sandipher) Jones and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1976. He worked for the electric company briefly and as a truck driver for Kime Lumber and Herb Jones Trucking. His passion, though, was his work as a singer-songwriter. Afflicted with both diabetes and mental illness, Skipp took ownership of his issues and sought the help of Loudonville Rest Home whose professional and loving care bought him 14 additional years and a better quality of life.
Skipp’s love of music began at a very early age. A child of the 60s and 70s, he loved nearly all guitar music and especially The Beatles. He wrote and recorded several songs and albums over the years and organized many bands, even when he was in grade school. A natural-born leader, he will be remembered for his outgoing nature, friendliness, and his arsenal of memorized jokes (mostly groaners). A reader and thinker, his quest for truth in faith led to many conversations, most recently with Rev. John Fitch. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus and attended the First Baptist Church since moving to Loudonville where he played with the “Nifty 50s” in festivals and other gatherings of the church.
Skipp is survived by his parents and sister, Jocelyn D. Jones of Elmhurst, New York. They will receive friends on Sunday, August 19 from 2-5 pm at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bucyrus with Pastor Mike Greenler officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial donations are encouraged to be made payable to Loudonville Rest Home (for Activity Fund), National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and given through the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared on Skipp’s Tribute Wall.
