Shirley Ann Schieber, 79, of Bucyrus, passed peacefully at home on Sunday, October 20, 2024 surrounded by many who loved her dearly.
She was born April 19, 1945 in Garrison, Kentucky to the late Walter “Tom” and Goldie (Sexton) Dummitt. She grew up very poor but being a strong and hard-working woman, she persevered and made a good life for her and those around her. Shirley earned her GED and then completed cosmetology school while living in Kentucky. In the early 1980s she came to Bucyrus and began working at Altercare as a cook and nurse’s aide. In 1989, she completed her LPN training and continued caring for patients at Altercare. She then took a position at the County Home until they closed and hired in at Heartland, spending 20 years until retirement. She never shied away from a task at hand and always treated those around her as she wished to be treated.
On December 2, 1989, she married Dave Schieber, who she met through her sister and brother-in-law, and they’ve enjoyed 35 years of marriage. In addition to caring for residents at the nursing home, she helped Dave around the farm, and they often canned a lot of what was grown. They shared many Sunday drives around the area, as to keep an eye on neighboring farms; took several trips to Amish Country and mostly just enjoyed time spent on their veranda, sipping coffee while socializing with others. Shirley was a motherly figure to everyone around her and went above and beyond for her family, especially her grandchildren, who she cared for as her own children. She was an excellent cook and over the years mastered creating items such as fried chicken, chili, coleslaw and her most excellent chocolate chip cookies. Shirley was always up for a shopping trip and often bought items for others including family and fellow workers. She will be remembered as a faithful and devoted wife as well as a selfless servant to all and will be missed by many.
In addition to her husband Dave, Shirley is survived by daughters, Barbara (Larry) Miller, Tia Crowden and Jean McGlone; grandchildren, Davey Crowden and fiancé Mackayla Scarbrough, Rebekah Paige Kissling, Amber Wisterman, Russ Swindle and Rose Swindle; seven great grandchildren; siblings, Betty (Jerry) Sparks, Judy (Dennis) Devore, Alice (Joe) Schieber, Danny (Irene) Dummitt and Billy (Debbie) Dummitt as well as many extended family members.
She is reunited in Heaven with her grandson, Shane Wisterman as well as others who’ve gone before her.
On Friday, October 25, Shirley’s memorial visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and the Ohio Nurse Honor Guard Coalition will hold their tribute service at 5:45 pm at Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St. Bucyrus. Her memorial service will begin at 10:30 am Saturday at Scioto United Methodist Church, 3203 Lemert Rd. Bucyrus (corner of Lemert and S.R. 4) with Pastor James Ellis officiating.
If desired, donations can be made payable to Scioto UMC and will be accepted through the funeral home or at the church on the day of services. Expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared on her guestbook.
