Sharon L. Estrada, 87, of Bucyrus, passed peacefully at her home on Sunday, September, 11, 2022.
She was born May 22, 1935, daughter of the late Mildred (Nickelson) Wessel and was a 1953 graduate of Bucyrus High School. In August of that year, she enlisted in the US Navy and while serving, Sharon met Lorenzo Estrada, a serviceman in the Marine Corps. They married on February 12, 1958, and he preceded her in death on June 4, 1996. Following her time in the service, she earned her associates degree in Criminal Justice while living in California.
With Lorenzo being a career Marine, their family had the privledge of residing in a few areas of the United States. In 1972, Sharon and family made their way back to Bucyrus where she cared for her family as a homemaker; worked at WBCO; operated the Crestline branch of Turquoise Showcase (business started by her husband) and retired following many years of helping area youth as a teacher’s aide in the Bucyrus School District. Many of her teaching years were spent in the Lincoln school building.
Sharon was a member of Bucyrus United Methodist Church and in her earlier years, at First UMC, she was proud to help wherever needed. One of her favorite church memories was their two-week European trip with the youth led by Rev. Chris Martin. She had also been an active member of the Business & Professional Women of Bucyrus.
Sharon enjoyed time spent with family and was often on the go following her grandchildren with their sporting events. She and Lorenzo spent many years selling their turquoise creations at the Bratwurst Festival as well as other area festivals. She enjoyed traveling, working in her floral and vegetable gardens and to keep her mind sharp, she worked crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her three children, Robin (Randy Olson) Estrada, Randal Estrada, and Robert (Linda) Estrada; three grandchildren, who knew her as “dear sweet granny”, Kevin Estrada, Sheryll Estrada and Tyson (Heather) Estrada; four great grandchildren, Amira, Lincoln, Mya and Kylee; a sister, Sondra Trapp and a sister-in-law, Marylin Wessel.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, David Estrada; great grandson, Ethan Estrada; brother, David Wessel and a brother-in-law, Jerry Trapp.
Her family will receive guests from 10-11 am Tuesday, September 20 at Wise Funeral Service, where her funeral will follow that day at 11:00 am with Pastor Mike Corwin officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the US Navy and the Bucyrus Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
If desired, donations can be made payable to any veteran organization, humane society/wildlife fund or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. These gifts will be accepted through the funeral home and expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared on her tribute wall.
