Salome Esterline

Salome A. (Heinlen) Esterline died Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the age of 93 at the Carlisle House in Bucyrus, Ohio. Born August 18, 1920 to the late Howard and Blanche (Neumann) Heinlen, she was the second youngest of seven children: Alesta Christman, Donavon Heinlen, Ruth Schiefer, Gladys Heinlen, Audrey Luginbuhl and Howard Atlee Heinlen. She is survived by her brother, Howard, who resides in Towson, Md.

For 69 years, Salome was married to Walter C. Esterline, who preceded her in death November 8, 2009. The couple eloped and married in Vanceburg, Ky. before Walter joined the United States Coast Guard at the beginning of World War II. Salome joined Walter in Orange, Texas after their first daughter (Patricia) was born.

Salome shaped her life through hard work, a commitment to family and friends and her deep faith in the Lord.

During the war, Salome worked at the Rationing Board in Texas. After Walter served his country, the family returned to Bucyrus where they managed the Fish Hatchery. She also worked in the factory at GE. After she gave birth to her second daughter (Linda), she became the credit manager at the local JC Penney store. Salome was also the office manager for Dr. Newhard and orthodontists, Drs. Socha and Shadeed. The couple also had an entrepreneurial spirit and owned and operated a number of successful businesses including The Mac-Walt Drive-In, The Dairy Crest, Red-Eye Realty and for the past 40 years, Estie Rentals.

Salome loved to travel, whether it was a quick trip to the Amish country or their winter home in Lake Panasoffkee, Fla. She enjoyed traveling with her family the most, including vacations to The Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, New York and Orlando; and visiting countries abroad such as England, France, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Salome is survived by her daughter, Patricia Esterline, and daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Bob Durtschi of Bucyrus; grandchild, Michael and his wife Julie Esterline and great grandchildren, Kelsey and Ross Esterline, all of Dublin.

During one trip to the Amish country, she purchased an Amish loom and quickly had the entire family involved making hand-woven rag rugs. The Loom Room became a cottage-business and their rugs a can’t-miss stop at local craft shows and the Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival. Salome was an avid crafter and kept her hands busy sewing, crocheting and quilting family heirlooms.

Over the years, Salome developed life-long friendships and enjoyed spending time with her husband and friends bowling, going out for dinner (especially to New Riegel for ribs and chicken), to long weekends camping and sitting around the fire ring sharing stories.

A member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Salome shaped her Christianity through various groups and activities including the Women’s Guild and vacation bible school. She was also a life member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #3.

A memorial service will be held, Friday, January 31 at 12 Noon at St. John’s UCC where friends and family may call one hour prior. Rev. Steven E. Voelker will officiate. A luncheon will be provided at St. John’s UCC following the memorial service.
