Ruth E. Hoover-Smith, 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at Carlisle Place in Bucyrus.



She was born March 22, 1933 in Chatfield to the late Nelson and Alverda (Candel) Rothhaar. A member of the Bucyrus High School class of 1951, Ruth lived her entire life in Bucyrus and Nevada areas.



On October 3, 1948, she married Eugene F. Hoover and they shared 44 years raising a family, searching out antiques and serving customers throughout North America at The Huckster Antique Store in Nevada; a business they operated until Gene’s death in 1993. In 1995, Ruth married Robert G. Smith, who also preceded her in death.



Ruth was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. She appreciated things to be in an orderly fashion and wasn’t shy about fixing or tending to a project that needed completed. Wednesday and Saturday’s were reserved for baking and Sundays were special as it began with church and ended with a family dinner, a tradition carried on for nearly 25 years. She loved sewing for family and friends and had a knack for hanging wallpaper.



Ruth was active at Nevada Lutheran Church for many years and more recently found peace and guidance while worshiping at the Bucyrus United Methodist Church. She volunteered as a Gray Lady for many years at Bucyrus Community Hospital as well as read and changed the lives of many students at Bucyrus Elementary School as an Ohio Reads Volunteer.



She is survived by two loving children, Stephen A. (Debra) Hoover and Penny L. Billings; four grandchildren, Amy (Tim) Plumley, Matthew (Anne) Hoover, Chad Williams and Owen Williams; one step-granddaughter, Shari (Vince) Brickner; seven great grandchildren, Logan and Bailey Plumley, Ella, Mia, Townes and Roman Hoover and Lucas Williams as well as many nieces and nephews.



Ruth was preceded in death by three sisters, Arlene Sheehan, Barbara Risinger and Helen Frank; one brother, Richard Rothhaar and a son-in-law, Charles R. Billings, whom she was proud to have introduced to her daughter.



Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Monday, April 17 at Wise Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Bucyrus UMC with Pastor Mike Corwin officiating. Burial will follow in Nevada Cemetery.



Memorial contributions may be made payable to either Bucyrus City Schools, c/o BES Library or to the Bucyrus United Methodist Church. These donations can be given at the funeral home or during the morning of her funeral at the church. Memories are encouraged to be shared on her Tribute Wall.
