He was born April 7, 1932 in Altoona, PA to the late Russell W. Sr. and Viola (Irvin) Watson. Russell graduated from Mt. Union High School in Mt. Union, PA and shortly thereafter came to Bucyrus where he worked at G. E. until being drafted into the US Army in 1953 where he was stationed in South Korea. Russell was honorably discharged in 1954 and returned home to the love of his life, Barbara S. Welch. They were married May 15, 1955 and she survives.
Russell was a hardworking man and displayed this trait working at Timken for 34 years until retiring in 1994. Even after retirement, his work ethic was showcased in mowing for the city and others which was his passion until health no longer permitted him to do so.
Russell loved following his family through the years with their sporting events and also enjoyed watching OSU basketball. He spent many days outside when the weather was nice and warm mowing, feeding the birds or working in their garden. During the winter, he worked in the basement refinishing woodwork. He didn't join many organizations but he loved attending church and was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
In addition to Barb, his wife of nearly 59 years, Russ is survived by three children, David (Terry) Watson of Scottsdale, AZ, Thomas Watson of Bucyrus and Karen Watson of Columbus; two grandchildren, Wesley Watson and Tessa Watson; two step-grandchildren, Stafford (Kari) Smith and Bryan Smith. Also surviving are three sisters, Darlene (Jerry) Fetter of Lancaster, PA, Doris (Jim) Foght and Mary Lou (Boyd) Martin both of Altoona.
Russ is preceded in death by two brothers, George and John “Jack” Watson and one sister, Betty Foor.
