Russell Oppenlander

Russell W. Oppenlander, 90, of Bucyrus, died Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Altercare of Bucyrus with his loving wife at his side.

He was born August 17, 1921 in Bucyrus to the late William G. and Alma C. (Meister) Oppenlander. Russell was a 1939 graduate of Bucyrus High School and then was proud to have served his country in the US Army during WW II. Russell returned to Bucyrus and on August 25, 1946 married Kathryn A. Krauter who survives.

Russell was a quiet, hard working man which was a trait he gained from his father. He was employed at Timken for 30 plus years before retiring in 1981. He was a lifelong member of Good Hope Lutheran Church where he served as an usher for many years and assisted in counting the offering. Russell enjoyed traveling with Kathryn when the opportunity arose, but his true passion in life was gardening. He enjoyed planting different fruits and vegetables but he was known for his potatoes. When he couldn't work in the garden he would either build something through his interest with woodworking or he might be found watching football. Russell was also a member of the American Legion, Post 181 and a longtime blood donor through the Crawford County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Kathryn A. Oppenlander of Bucyrus and a cousin, Joe Oppenlander of Shelburne, Vermont. In addition to his parents, Russell is preceded in death by a brother who died in infancy.

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 31 at Wise Funeral Service where the funeral will be held, beginning at 11:00 a.m. that day with Pastor Dave Bliss officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with full military rites provided by the Am. Legion, Post 181. Memorial contributions may be given to the Holmes Twp. Volunteer Fire Dept. through the funeral home.
