Roderick D. Stewart

Roderick D. Stewart, 71, a longtime resident of Sulphur Springs and currently resided in Bucyrus, died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Heartland of Bucyrus following a long battle with cancer.

Rod was born October 13, 1941 at home in Sulphur Springs to the late Robert J. and Florence A. (Gwinner) Stewart. He was a 1959 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School and then completed trade school in Chicago. Rod returned home where he worked at PPG for 42 plus years before retiring.

On February 24, 1978 he married June Herzog who survives and together they owned Stewart's Station in Sulphur Springs for many years. Rod grew up attending St. John's Lutheran Church in Sulphur until the church dissolved. He served in the Ohio National Guard during the 1960's and was a social member of the VFW Post 2920 and Eagles 859 both in Crestline. He also served on the Union Cemetery Board for a number of years.

Roderick took his time when doing anything but always believed in doing everything right the first time. His motto was, "walk slow, drink cold water and never get excited". He supported local businesses and loved taking care of his yard. He liked old time rock and roll and even installed an eight track player on his blue Ford Tractor so time spent in the yard was even that much better. He looked forward to relaxing in his recliner on Sundays where he could watch TV or play video games and he loved visiting with friends and family, especially every Memorial Day at their pond.

In addition to his wife of 35 years, Rod is survived by a daughter, Angie Stewart-Burton, two grandchildren, Travis (Shannon Scheffler) Watson and Austin Burton and one great grandson, Brylon Watson all of Bucyrus. Rod is also survived by one sister, Mary Ann (Charles) McCallister of Sulphur Springs.

Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, August 13 at Wise Funeral Service. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Union Cemetery with Rev. Harold Hasenauer officiating. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society through the funeral home.
