One who provides knowledge and education and treats every individual student as if he or she were her own, will have a positive lasting impact and change that life forever. Robin D. Estrada did just that and her lessons taught to others will carry on for generations to come. Robin passed peacefully on Monday, September 26, 2022 at Advent Health Hospice in Florida following a hard fought battle with cancer.
She was born November 8, 1958 in Oceanside, California, the oldest of three children of the late Lorenzo and Sharon Lee (Wessel) Estrada. As an early teenager, her family moved to Bucyrus, Ohio, and in 1977 she graduated from Bucyrus High School, where she excelled at tennis for the lady Redmen. Robin went onto earn her bachelor’s degree in Retail Fashion Management, which led to jobs in Michigan, Massachusetts, and Florida. Not feeling that this was her true calling, she went onto receive her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Central Florida and would spend the next 31 years, mentoring, educating, and changing lives of young children in the Orange County Florida Public School System. She retired only due to her decline in health. Robin primarily taught second grade, but also spent time teaching kindergarten, third and fourth grades. Robin’s teaching style was hands on, or one might say “costumes on” as she often dressed up in different characters as they prepared to watch a movie or get a point across. She made learning fun through her use of butterfly trees, shark teeth and other learning props. She was always interested in what her students were doing and often traveled to watch many of them with their activities. It was also important to her that every child have an equal learning opportunity, therefore she was always showing up in their homes to offer tutoring.
Robin was proud to have completed both the Citizens Fire and Police Certification as well as National Certification for Public Education and Fire Prevention. She was responsible for coordinating with various government agencies in planning a national mock disaster which eerily took place on September 11, 2001 prior to the attack on our nation.
During her period of fire certification, she met Randy Olson, a fire fighter whom she struck up a relationship with and over the past 28 years, they’ve enjoyed creating wonderful memories through traveling and companionship. When not with her students, Robin, enjoyed anything on or around the water, including boating, snorkeling, and kayaking. She also loved nature and found working outside around her home to be peaceful and relaxing.
She will be deeply missed by her significant other, Randy Olson; brothers, Randal Estrada and Robert (Linda) Estrada; niece, Sheryll Estrada; nephews, Kevin Estrada and Tyson (Heather) Estrada; great nieces and nephew, Amira, Lincoln, Mya and Kylee; aunts, Sondra Trapp, Marylin Wessel, Merlinda (Benny) Baca and Gloria Estrada as well as many cousins, friends, fellow teachers and former students.
In addition to her parents, Robin was preceded in death by her nephew, David Estrada and great nephew, Ethan Estrada and uncles, David Wessel and Jerry Trapp.
Services will be held at Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820, on Monday, October 10. Her family will receive guests from 10-10:55 am, followed by her funeral at 11:00 am with Pastor Becky Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery.
The service can be viewed live and memories and photos can be shared from Robin’s tribute page at www.wisefuneral.com.
If desired, it is suggested that donations be made payable to an organization of the donor’s choice that benefit children or veterans. These gifts will be accepted through the funeral home.
