Robert S. Rarick

Robert S. Rarick, 88, of Bucyrus died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Altercare of Bucyrus following a recent illness.

He was born in Bucyrus January 8, 1923 to the late Frank and Cora (Sawyer) Rarick. He played basketball for Bucyrus High School, from which he graduated in 1940. Robert proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He served in the south Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Richmond and the U.S.S. Hamlin, from which he witnessed the historic surrender of Japan while anchored in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945.

After his return, Robert met the former Eileen O'Keefe and quickly fell in love. They married on November 26, 1948 and shared nearly 51 years of marriage, before she preceded him in death on October 10, 1999.

Robert is survived by two sons, Craig (Karen) Rarick of Galion and Randall Rarick of Bucyrus; five grandchildren, Amber (Tim) Wertman, Stephanie Rarick, Seth Rarick, Sabrina Rarick, and Christina Rarick; and one brother, Frank Rarick of Bucyrus.

In addition to his parents and wife, Robert was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Rarick.

Robert was a hard-working, fair and honest man. He worked 35 years as a supervisor for The Timken Co., retiring in 1985. He took immaculate care of his home, yard and vehicles and always enjoyed a shrimp cocktail and cold Pepsi. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Indians and Browns. Robert especially loved his country and thought often of the men and women serving overseas. He was a life member of American Legion Post 181, VFW Post 1078 and Bucyrus Moose Lodge 669. Robert was also a member of First United Methodist Church.

The Rarick family will receive friends Tuesday, May 3 from 6-9 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service where the funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Ray LaSalle officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites provided by American Legion Post 181.
