Robert L. Powers

Robert Leroy Powers, 76, of Bucyrus died peacefully late Thursday night, September 12, 2013 at Heartland of Bucyrus.

He was born April 6, 1937 near Fulton, Ohio to the late Donald and Sadie Powers. He left school to begin working and met Carol Adkins, a coworker at Swan Rubber. They were married in 1959 and she preceded him in death in 1981.

Bob worked for Shunk Manufacturing for the majority of his career, retiring from Pacal Blades. When he was younger, he enjoyed playing softball and coaching Little League. He also rode and tinkered on motorcycles, was a member of the Bucyrus Eagles Aerie and kept a large vegetable garden. He loved to fish and camp in Sycamore and Marblehead and packed the family in the RV for road trips all over the country from the Grand Canyon to Niagara Falls and throughout Ohio and the South.

Bob will be remembered as an easygoing guy whose answer to most problems was, "Oh Well." He also had a strict devotion to sobriety through his affiliation with Alcoholics Anonymous. Bob attended his first AA meeting in the late 1980s and was faithful at meetings not only in Bucyrus but throughout the area as a sponsor, supporter and friend to many who, like him, sought the serenity to accept the things he couldn't change, the courage to change the things he could and wisdom to know the difference.

Bob is survived by four children, Robert A. (Marcy Slasor) Powers, Lorie (Steve) Brandt, Beth (Michael) Gatrell and Jon Powers; three grandsons, Robert J. (Crystal) Powers, Garrett Gatrell and Brett Gatrell; great grandson, Jhett Powers; brother, Don (Pauline) Powers; longtime companion, Linda Warye; daughter-in-law, Melinda Powers; sister-in-law, Willie Belle Addison and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife of 22 years, Bob was preceded in death by seven siblings, Derry (Norma Jean) Powers, Donnabelle (Robert) Rutledge, Bert (John) Bowser, George (Sarah) Powers, Earl (Jenny) Powers, Nolan (Helen) Powers and infant brother, Paul.

The Powers family will receive friends Monday, September 16 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus where his funeral will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ray LaSalle officiating. Burial will follow in Crawford County Memory Gardens.
