Robert “Bob” W. Whitmeyer, 90, of Bucyrus, died on January 27, 2021 at his home surrounded by family.
Bob was born November 20, 1930 in Bucyrus to the late Arthur W. and Louida U. (Cox) Whitmeyer. He lived in Bucyrus all his life and graduated from Holmes Liberty High School in 1948 before serving in the Air Force from 1950 until 1954. He completed boot camp in Texas before being stationed in Illinois then Idaho. On November 8, 1951 Bob married the love of his life, Norma Stone. After his service, he went on to work as a Quality Control Technician for Timken for over 30 years. Bob also fixed typewriters outside of work. He served on city council before serving as the mayor of Bucyrus. Once his term as mayor was completed in 1995, he retired.
Bob was known as a homebody who enjoyed gardening, listening to old hymns, and snacking on pecans. Being a homebody, however, did not keep him from being a part of the church. He was the choir director for First Baptist Church for a few years. He also enjoyed singing in the church choirs. Bob also took part in weekly bible studies at the Marion Correctional Institution as a member of Gideons, an organization he was passionate about. He found enjoyment in life through his family and would go to his children and grandchildren’s events. One of his favorite things to do was to meet at the Pelican House with a group of friends called “The Rusty Zippers”. After his retirement, Bob and Norma would take yearly trips to Arizona to escape the cold Ohio weather and to visit Bob’s family. This yearly tradition went on for 10 years before his health declined.
Bob is survived by his wife of 69 years, Norma; children, Ken (Vicki) Whitmeyer, Dan (Elaine) Whitmeyer, Colleen (Dan) Dotson, and Tammy (Mark) Kaiser; grandchildren, Scott (Krista) Whitmeyer, Ryan (Kay) Whitmeyer, Sara (Matt) Corona, Renee (Mike) Brandt, Adam (Erica) Whitmeyer, Aimee (Chad) Stubbs, Zach (Elizabeth) Dotson, Leslie (Albert) Allgyre, and Ben Kaiser; 26 great grandchildren with one on the way; three great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his two brothers, Lyle and Galen Whitmeyer.
Bob’s family will be holding a private service for the family with burial in Brokensword Cemetery with full military rites provided by the Air Force Honor Guard and the Bucyrus Veterans Military Funeral Detail. Memorial contributions can be made payable to Gideons or Trinity Baptist Church in Marion and sent to Wise Funeral Service at 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, OH 44820. Memories and photos can be shared on his tribute page.
