Richard W. Schifer

Richard W. Schifer, 91, of Bucyrus died Saturday morning, May 14, 2011 at Bucyrus Community Hospital.

He was born February 8, 1920 at the family home in Bucyrus Twp. to the late William and Agnes (Brose) Schifer and graduated from Mt. Zion High School in 1938.

Richard married the former Virginia Sheaffer on September 18, 1940 and she preceded him in death on January 8. A lifelong farmer, he was proud of the success his family farm on Bucyrus-Nevada Road had while under his care.

Richard was a firm, strong-willed man who believed in hard work and taking care of the things he was blessed to have owned. When away from the farm, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on fast cars and performance machines and summers on Lake Erie. He also liked to travel, visiting a number of states and wintering in Florida in his later years. He was a strong gun rights advocate, a member of the NRA, the former Bucyrus Gun Club, and Eagles No. 2875 in Huron.

Richard is survived by two children, Kathy (Bill) Allonas of Bucyrus and Ron (Leslie) Schifer of Marion; six grandchildren, Susan Schifer of Columbus, Rob Schifer of Dayton, Christy (Joe) Ebel of Newark, Veronica (Shawn) Hildreth of Bucyrus, John (Leslie Smith) Howard of Monnett and Jeffery (Mandy Sack) Howard of Bucyrus; and seven great grandchildren, Joshua Ebel, Ashley Ebel, Mackenzie Ebel, Alexandria Howard, Briley Hildreth, Lillian Howard and Grady Howard.

In addition to his parents and wife of over 70 years, he was preceded in death by a sister, Emma Marie Nelson of Galion.

Friends may call Monday evening, May 16 from 5-8 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service where the funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Bernie France officiating. Burial will follow in Nevada Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer's Association through the funeral home.
