Richard Titus McCormick, 88, died Sunday, October 9, 2011 at Heartland of Bucyrus where he had resided in recent months.



He was born February 14, 1923 in Marion County to the late Robert and Grace (Titus) McCormick. Richard graduated from Marion Harding High School in 1942, then entered the U.S. Marine Corps in September. He was at Parris Island, S.C. and Camp LeJeune, N.C. before being deployed to American, British and Wallis Islands in the South Pacific where he was twice wounded. He reported to Washington, D.C. to serve in the Arlington National Cemetery Honor Guard before he was discharged having received the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and three Presidential Unit Citations. He married Helene Chase and lived in Massachusetts before divorcing and returning to Marion.

In the 1950's Richard worked from Bucyrus for WMRN reading the news from 11-12 and announcing sporting events in Crawford County. He married Isabelle (Gerstenslager) Stuckman on September 30, 1961 and retired from the Ohio Department of Highways for which he bought real estate.

Richard enjoyed traveling with Isabelle, visiting a number of states and enjoying 6th Marine Reunions all over the U.S. He was a longtime member of the Rusty Zippers, meeting at Clady's Drug Store, Freddie's and in recent years, the Pelican House. He also enjoyed golfing with friends at Valley View Golf Course, even earning a prized hole-in-one on #9 in 1990. Richard was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bucyrus where he served on council and enjoyed teaching, membership and variety shows with the Friendship Class. He also served a term on Bucyrus City Council, was a member of American Legion Post 181, Bucyrus Historical Society, Friends of the Library, and Bucyrus Little Theater, attended Ohio State football games, and sang in Barbershop choruses in Marion and Bucyrus.

Richard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Isabelle; son, Patrick (Stella) McCormick of Massachusetts; stepson, Michael (Sue) Stuckman; grandchildren, Bridget (Kahn) Vun, Patrick McCormick, Richard McCormick, Jeffrey McCormick, Richie McCormick, Katie (Simon) Herchek, Jeffrey Stuckman and Julia Stuckman; great granddaughter, Luciana Vun; nephews P.A. and Bill (Judy) Thompson and a number of great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard McCormick and sister and brother-in-law, Myrene and Stanley Thompson.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, October 12 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service and the funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Curch, Bucyrus with Pastor Don L. Neumann officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites provided by the U.S. Marine Corps and American Legion Post 181.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer's Association through the funeral home.
