Richard L. Sherman, 76, of 5193 Annapolis DeKalb Rd. was called home by his Heavenly Father Wednesday night, September 2, 2015 as his family and nurse sang hymns at his bedside. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer in April.
Dick was born April 2, 1939 in Fremont to the late Howard and Jennie (Lee) Sherman. He was raised in Green Springs where, as a kid, he loved to tinker and fix things like discarded clocks and radios. Dick also enjoyed hunting and fishing, hobbies he continued his entire life. Dick was in Cub Scouts and 4-H as a youth. It was at a 4-H meeting where he unknowingly first met his future bride. While playing a game and running out of a barn, he flattened a skinny little dark-complected girl, a year his junior. Dick graduated from Green Springs High School in 1957 where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball for the Bobcats. He represented his high school at Buckeye Boys State his junior year.
As a sophomore, a beautiful schoolmate named Geraldine Hessick caught his eye as he walked by the biology classroom and he “stopped looking for anyone else.” In spite of their earlier “run in,” she agreed to go on a hayride which resulted in a relationship that led to their marriage on the bride’s 20th birthday, January 3, 1960.
After high School, Dick worked as an equipment operator on the pipeline for O.A. Meyers of Green Springs. Though the money was good, he knew it would not be fulfilling for the long term. He moved with his young family to Bowling Green where he attended BGSU and graduated in 1966 with an Education major and Biology minor. Ten years later, Dick earned his Master’s Degree in Education.
Mr. Sherman taught a half year at Mansfield Madison and continued his 30 year teaching career at Colonel Crawford School District. The majority was teaching junior high science with stints as Principal and sixth grade teacher at Leesville and Sulphur Springs Elementary Schools. Dick was an assistant football coach with the late Bob Royer and Larry Copeland. He coached junior high girls basketball and volleyball and boys basketball at Leesville. Toward the end of Dick’s teaching career, he was instrumental in developing an outdoor learning center for the students at CCJH.
Dick came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ in the early 1980s, a decision he made after seeing Christ-like qualities in a number of people he admired. He attended the former Hope Church in Sulphur Springs, and most recently First Alliance Church in Bucyrus. Outside of work and caring for his home, Dick enjoyed tinkering, woodworking, hunting, hiking, camping and tree planting. Baker Brothers Sporting Goods was a favorite stop after his retirement.
Dick is survived by his bride of 55 years, Gerry Sherman. Daughter, Lynn (Albert) Osden of Bellville, Illinois and their five children and grandchildren: Rachel (Travis) Montgomery and sons, John Dylan, Conway and Colt; Jonathan (Rachel) Osden and daughter Elexia; Daniel, Joseph and Hanna Osden. Son, Michael (Annette) Sherman of Sulphur Springs and their sons and grandchildren: Derek (Chelsey) Sherman, children Tristan and Charleigh; Jared and Nathaniel Sherman. Daughter, Jody (Scott) Snyder and their children: Ellie, Josh, Anna, and Caleb Snyder. Also surviving are a niece, Wendy Jarosick; a nephew, Randy Sherman and a sister-in-law, Nancy Vanderpool.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his brother, Dennis Sherman in 1994.
Dick was laid to rest in Sandusky Twp. Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, September 8 at 12 Noon at First Alliance Church, 1955 Hopley Ave., Bucyrus with Pastor Dan Stegeman and son-in-law, Albert Osden officiating.
