Phyllis L. Jerew

Phyllis Lee Jerew, 84, of Bucyrus died peacefully at home on Friday, October 12, 2018 with her family by her side.



She was born January 27, 1934 in Hico, West Virginia to the late Eugene and Addie (Hicks) Hypes. The Hypes family made their way to Marion when Phyllis was in first grade and she graduated from Marion Harding in 1952. While at Harding, she met her sweetheart, John Jerew, and they were married November 25, 1951 in Trinity Baptist Church in Marion. They moved to Bucyrus in 1956 after John’s employment with The Timken Co. Phyllis, also known as “Phid,” worked as a homemaker until her daughter was in grade school and then worked at JC Penney. She then owned and operated the Sit ‘n Shop on West Mary St. and later Kids World on South Sandusky before becoming the childcare provider for her grandchildren.



Phyllis was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her favorite career was taking care of her daughter and grandchildren. She was also very crafty, creating everything from beautiful floral arrangements to sock monkeys to entertain her family. She enjoyed the outdoors where she kept a flower garden and liked to take trips, especially to Myrtle Beach. In her younger years, she was a good bowler and excellent dancer. After moving to Bucyrus, the Jerews worshiped at the former First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School.



Phyllis is survived by her husband of nearly 67 years, John F. Jerew; daughter, Kerry Jerew; grandchildren, Nathan Springer, Ashley Wells, and Preston Ley; and great granddaughter, Keely Elizabeth Wells. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brother, Dr. Gene Hypes Jr. and sister, Peggy Brookover.



Phyllis was laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery where a private graveside service was held.
