Penny Stiefel, 80, died Saturday, November 23, 2024 at home under the care of her family and Avita Hospice.
She was born in Bucyrus on December 20, 1943 to the late Gus and Janet (McFarland) Wenninger. Penny grew up on North Lane Street and graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1961. Her life forever changed when Gene and Rosie Schwartz set her up on a blind date with John E. Stiefel Jr. They were inseparable, married on February 7, 1965 and only John’s death in 2022 would come between their true love, devotion, and care of 57 years.
Penny was a gifted seamstress and crafter. She sewed her family’s clothing with skill and trendy fashion. Penny and her girls also helped make John’s rocking horses come to life with their finishing touches. The Stiefel family loved being outdoors, supporting conservation efforts, camping, and traveling throughout the US and Canada. Penny and John made many friends through their DeLorean Club gatherings. A devoted homemaker, Penny also worked at JoAnn Fabrics and Strubel’s before retiring.
Penny is survived by children, Christine Stiefel, Jodi (Eric) Honaker, and John D. (Lorraine) Stiefel; grandchildren, Samantha and Jesse Honaker; sister, Judith Schuster; and sister-in-law, Judy Slater.
In addition to her beloved husband and parents, she was preceded in death by sister, Roberta “Bobbi” Wenninger-Clinger-Harpster; brother, Richard Wenninger; and sister and brothers-in-law, Bonnie (Zoney) Carpenter and Bob Slater.
The Stiefel family gathered privately to say goodbye to Penny. Those wishing to make memorial contributions are encouraged to make them payable to Alzheimer’s Association or Pheasants Forever and give through Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus. Memories and photos can be shared in the online guestbook.
