James Paul Robinson, 67, of Bucyrus, died Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Bucyrus Community Hospital surrounded by his family whose lives he impacted greatly. His battle with cancer was brief and, though he will be missed, Paul was still praising God for everything He gave him up until being called home.
He was born October 20, 1946 in Philadelphia, Miss. to the late Johnie and Lois (Williamson) Robinson. When Paul was young, the family moved to Bucyrus where he attended school and was a star football and basketball player, graduating in 1965.
He was drafted into the US Army and proudly served his country until 1968 when he returned home for a short time before attending college at Mt. Vernon Nazarene College where he played basketball for Coach Chet Foraker from 1969 to 1971. Paul worked at various factories but didn’t feel this was his calling. He asked his girlfriend, Tami Sharrock, to get him an application at the fire station in Bucyrus and this led to a 23 year career serving his community as a Bucyrus Fireman until retiring as a captain in 2000.
After several years of dating, Paul and Tami traveled to Naples, Fla. in their Ford Mustang (which they still own) and were married on August 22, 1980. Their inseparable relationship led to years of raising horses, bailing hay, traveling and just trying to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Paul enjoyed attending church at the First Presbyterian Church, he was a member of the Crawford Antique Farm Machinery Association, and he spent every possible minute in the outdoors and enjoyed watching sporting events.
In addition to his soulmate Tami, Paul is survived by siblings, Mary Edwards of Ashland, Pauline Messer and Willie (Pam) Robinson, both of Bucyrus, and Charlene (Glenn) Ross of Chatfield; loving nieces and nephews, many of which have looked to Paul as a role model. They are Candus, David, Johnnie, Kasey, Mike, Patty, Kellie, Kyle, Lindsey, Tina, Charma, Shay, Tori, Joe, Kennedy, Aaron, Shannon, Michelle, Michael and Melissa along with many great nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Wanda Sharrock and Anita Repp and one brother-in-law, J.C. (Bonnie) Sharrock.
Paul was preceded in death by two sisters, Bobbie Wilson and her husband Verl and Sadie Robinson; a brother and his wife, Johnie and Diane Robinson, two brothers-in-law, Jim Edwards and the Honorable, Kennedy Clare Sharrock and father and mother-in-law, former Mayor, Clare A. Sharrock and wife Evelyn Kennedy Sharrock.
His family will receive friends from 1-3 & 5-7 p.m. Sunday, September 7 at Wise Funeral Service. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor John Cory officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery where full military rites will be provided by both the US Army and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.
Memorial contributions may be given to First Presbyterian Church; the Crawford Antique Farm Machinery Association or the Humane Society serving Crawford County through the funeral home. Paul had a piggy bank collection and friends are encouraged to bring in loose change to fill one before it’s donated to a charity in Paul’s name.
