Paul James Yaussy, DDS, 92, died Saturday, March 3, 2018 at his home in Bucyrus.
He was born July 14, 1925 in rural Bucyrus to the late Paul E. and Hazel (Brinkman) Yaussy. PJ or Jim, as he was referred to by many, was a 1943 graduate of Holmes-Liberty High School. That fall he enlisted in the US Navy during WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre. After being discharged, he continued his education at Ohio State, graduating cum laude with his Doctor of Dental Science degree in 1951. By this point in life, Jim had married Miriam Shealy, who survives, and he served in the Navy once again during the Korean War as a Dental Officer. He recently visited Washington, DC with the Honor Flight Network in recognition of his service. Following his discharge in 1953, Jim began his dental practice which started in an office above the Schine Theater. A few years later, he moved his practice to Hill St. and in 1991, Dr. Yaussy sold his practice to Dr. Glen McMurray which gave him more time to winter at their home in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Jim and Miriam shared many good years together and created fond memories through their time spent with friends playing bridge and golf as well as their extensive travels in the motor home with their children. Jim was an active member of Good Hope Lutheran Church, where he sang in the choir and served on council. He also served on the Bucyrus Historical Society board of directors and was a member of Y-Men’s, the American Legion and was an OSU football season ticket holder since 1954. In addition to his family, Jim’s other passion was cars. BMW, Mazda Miata, along with other brands, provided miles of enjoyment but MG sports cars were his love, having restored seven of them from the ground up. He belonged to the National and Ohio MG Clubs and saw to it that he and Miriam attended every event possible.
In addition to Miriam, Jim’s wife of nearly 74 years, he is survived by three sons, Stephen (Mary) Yaussy, Douglas (Theresa) Yaussy, and Randall (Kimberly) Yaussy; four grandchildren, Leslie (Ryan) Braun, Gretchen (Dale) Hickman, Michael Yaussy, and Caitlin Yaussy; six great grandchildren, Kevin, Annalise and Derek Braun and Nate, Jack and Lindsey Hickman; one brother, Ronald (Nancy) Yaussy and a sister-in-law, Martha (Harold) Yaussy Eppley.
He was preceded in death by three siblings, Howard Yaussy, Chuck Yaussy, and Jean Feick.
Friends may call from 5-7 pm Thursday, March 8 at Wise Funeral Service, where his memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday with Pastor Renee Ahern officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, where military rites will be provided by the US Navy and American Legion, Post 181 Honor Guards.
Memorial contributions can be made payable to Good Hope Lutheran Church and will be used for the stained-glass window fund. These gifts will be accepted at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared on his Tribute Wall.
