Paul Knecht, 90, of Port Clinton and formerly of Bucyrus, passed peacefully Sunday, January 10, 2021 at Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky.
He was born May 11, 1930 at home in Bucyrus to the late Fred and Martha (Bruner) Knecht and was a 1948 graduate of Bucyrus High School. Shortly thereafter, Paul served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Korea for a period of service. On May 15, 1954, Paul married Virginia M. Cress.
He worked alongside his father at Bucyrus Transfer & Storage until Fred’s passing. It was at this time Paul took over the business and made the lives of thousands of area families and business easier by handling their moving needs. He was proud to have worked with his sons over the years before retiring in 1993.
From a young age, Paul spent many weekends at Lake Erie and their family created many memories and laughs together. In 1993 he and Virginia called Port Clinton home and he kept busy by fishing, crafting and building wooden creations, (many of which became gifts for family and friends) and he did his best to be an attentive neighbor to those around him.
Paul and family enjoyed years of camping at various locations. His most recent hobbies included sudoku puzzles, solitaire, and painting by numbers. He often unwound by watching the waves roll in or puffing on his pipe.
Paul is survived by his wife Virginia of 66 years; children, Ed (Kathy), Barb (Allan) Niedermeier, Douglas (Cindy), Eric, Brian (Kathy), and Kevin (Christina); 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and a sister, Vivian (Ken) Chandler. He was preceded in death by sisters, Betty Longworth, Naomi Nigh and Marjorie Cox.
Paul’s family will receive friends from 4-7 pm Thursday, January 14 at Wise Funeral Service. His funeral will be private, and burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery where full military rites will be provided by the Bucyrus Veterans Military Funeral Detail and the US Army Honor Guard.
Donations can be made payable to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of the donor’s choice. These gifts will be accepted through the funeral home and expressions of sympathy are encouraged to be shared on his tribute page.
