Norma Jean Roberts

Norma Jean Roberts, 92, of Bucyrus died early Sunday, October 3, 2021 at Lexington Court Care Center after several weeks of failing health.

She was born November 3, 1928 in New Philadelphia to the late Paul B. and Helen M. (Shaffer) Sweany. She graduated from New Philadelphia High School in 1946 and was very active on the Quakers’ sports teams as she was the only girl to earn a GAA letter as a leader in basketball, volleyball, and bowling. She later met John Roberts from Somerdale and knew he was the one when he came to the Poconos where Jean was working to sweep her off her feet and bring her back to Ohio. They were married July 1, 1948. John was employed with The Timken Co. and the young family moved to Bucyrus to establish the new plant in the 1950s. John preceded Jean in death on March 29, 1984.

Jean will be remembered a classy lady who dressed well for every occasion. Her “Juicy” glasses set her apart along with her ornery, feisty, and fun-loving personality. Her gift of hospitality and ability to put anyone at ease and hold a great conversation distinguished her. It was not uncommon for Jean to go to dinner alone but have several conversations with friends or strangers she met, some of whom would surprise her by paying for her meal. She enjoyed breakfast with her dear friends every morning at Bob Evans and never missed an episode of Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, or an Ohio State football game. Jean was an avid bowler well into her 80s and once organized a successful league. She was an excellent homemaker and caregiver and took meticulous care of her home and property as she had an amazing eye for fashion, interior design, and landscaping. She was a member of Bucyrus United Methodist Church and the former First UMC and Eastern Star Chapter #3.

Jean is survived by daughter, Judy Roberts of Lexington; nieces, Alexis (Leonard) Boley, Deanna Sweaney, Tracy Meese, and Georgia Sweaney; and her “extra daughter,” Sharon Cummins. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brother, Dale (Addie) Sweaney, many dear breakfast companions, and her precious schnauzers, Sadie and Cokie.

Services will take place on Thursday, October 7, 2021. Friends may call from 10 – 11:55 am at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus where the funeral will begin at 12 Noon with Pastor Mike Corwin officiating. She will be laid to rest privately in New Cumberland Cemetery.

Memorial donations can be made payable to Humane Society, Alzheimer’s Association, or Bucyrus UMC and given through Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820. Memories and photos can be shared on Jean’s Tribute Wall.
