Ned C. Weber

Ned C. Weber, 83, of Bucyrus went to his heavenly home early Sunday morning, November 8, 2015 at Bucyrus Community Hospital. He had beaten an April diagnosis of lung cancer, but breathing complications from the treatment were not able to be overcome this side of Heaven.

He was born December 13, 1931 in Seneca County to the late Otto R. and Olive B. (Day) Weber. Ned graduated from Bettsville High School and enlisted in the US Air Force, but not before his mom urged him to propose to Ruth Elizabeth Fritz whom his friends had introduced to him on a blind date four months earlier. They were married October 12, 1952 and Ned returned to Seneca County after his enlistment where he farmed with his brother Kenneth for six years. He supplemented his income by driving truck and working for Bonded Oil Company.

He gave up full-time farming and moved his young family to Bucyrus in 1961 where he spent 18 years owning and operating a SOHIO service station and car wash. He was co-owner and operator with his wife of the Short Stop Convenience Store and later co-owned Weber’s Radiator & Auto Repair with his son Gary until retirement. Former employees have remarked of how fair he was as a boss and always encouraging them to grow and better themselves. His retirement was short-lived as he still did radiator repair work from his home, helped neighbors farm, and drove bus for Bucyrus Schools for 13 years.

Outside of work, Ned loved getting together with friends to dance, go out to eat, or play cards. He and Ruth enjoyed traveling throughout the United States including Hawaii and got to visit Europe and the Far East as well. He and Ruth reunited with five of his service buddies over the years, only one of which survives. At home, he was a self-taught do-it-yourselfer who took great pride in a beautiful home and immaculate yard. A day wasn’t complete without a morning visit with the gang at Hardees and he also looked forward to deer hunting, boating, and skiing at Holiday Lake. Ned was a member of the Bucyrus Masonic Lodge, former trustee of Oakwood Cemetery and member of the former Grace United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee, usher and was in the Ever Faithful Sunday School class. He was now a member of Bucyrus United Methodist Church and will be remembered for a great sense of humor and ability to make people laugh and pick them up when they were down. Ned never lost his sense of humor, even as he joked with family and caregivers in his last hours.

Ned was so proud of his family and looked forward to them gathering on most every holiday and the yearly get-togethers with extended family over the 4th of July. He is survived by his dear bride of 63 years, Ruth Weber; three children, Vicky D. Weber, Gary M. Weber and wife Juliana, and Debra K. Cooper and husband Dwayne, all of Bucyrus; grandchildren, Jessica Wolff, Arron (Jen) Weber, Ryan Stauffer, Tiffany (Josh) Ginter, Dustin (Ashley) Stauffer, Becky Bogart, all in Ohio, and Jamie (Mark) Alltop of Tennessee; great grandchildren, Savannah, Cambria, Grady, Addison, Jordyn, Alexis, Hadley, Brooklyn, Emily, Makenzie, Blaize, Cole, and Christopher; sister-in-law, Jean Weber of Bettsville; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Ned was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Weber.

The Weber family will receive friends at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus on Wednesday, November 11 from 1-3 and 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Bucyrus UMC Worship Center, 227 S. Walnut St., on Thursday at 11:00 am with Pastor Mike Corwin officiating and burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery where military honors will be given by the US Air Force and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.

Memorial contributions are encouraged to be given to Bucyrus UMC or the American Cancer Society through the funeral home and memories can be shared on Ned’s Tribute Wall.
