Milton August Scheffler, 80, of rural Bucyrus, Ohio was called to his heavenly home Sunday, July 24, 2016 at his farm home where he was born and raised. His family and beloved wife of 57 years were at his side when he passed away peacefully after a long, hard battle with cancer.
Fondly called "Milt," he was born May 2, 1936 to the late Frank and Bertha (Leonberger) Scheffler. On May 24, 1959 he married Julia Guinther at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, Bucyrus and she survives him. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served two years active duty, last stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington where he was honorably discharged. A Christian man of quiet faith, he was an active lifelong member of Good Hope Lutheran Church, Bucyrus, having served on Property Care Committee as well as various other projects.
Milt graduated from Holmes-Liberty High School with the class of 1954. He was employed by the Timken Roller Bearing Company for 10 years. He then retired and became a full-time farmer fulfilling his passion for doing what he loved best, raising crops and beef cattle for 60 plus years. Later in life, Milt was employed as a Timber Spotter for Boreman Hardwoods Inc., Wooster, Ohio for 12 years.
He was a fun loving, kind hearted man who enjoyed making people feel welcome by sharing a laugh or joke. He taught his children to love God, show respect for others, to be honest, and the values and blessings of hard work. His greatest joy in life were his children and family. Milt enjoyed going to County Fairs, attending Cattle Sales, watching horse racing, visits to Amish Country, and he loved animals, especially his dogs, horses, and beef cattle.
He was a member of American Legion Post 181 and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #669. He served his community as a former Holmes Township Trustee. Milt served on the Board of Directors for the former Zeigler Milling Company. He was a committee member of the Crawford County FSA. He was a member of the Crawford Antique Farm Machinery Assoc. and served on the building committee for the Museum. Always wanting to promote 4-H and FFA, he served on the Junior Fair Beef committee and helped the youth with their projects. Milt was a long time member of the Crawford County Cattlemen's Assoc. and served on the Executive Board. He was honored by receiving the Beef Industry Award in 2004. The Wynford FFA chose him to be an honorary chapter member for giving his time and service to them.
In addition to his wife, Milt is survived by son, Mark (Marla) Scheffler; daughter, Karen (Jason) Chapman; sisters, Ruth (Wilmer) Loy and Helen Ross; brother, Wayne (Carol) Scheffler; grandchildren, Morgan Scheffler, Tyler (Cassandra) Stuckert, and Travis (Jessica) Stuckert; three great grandchildren, Titus, Lillian, and Isaiah; sisters-in-law, Shirley Hartschuh, Mary (George) Hartman, and Linda (Victor) Holycross; and brother-in-law, James Guinther.
Milt was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Susan; brothers-in-law, Dwight Hartschuh and Myron Ross; and sister-in-law, Ginny Guinther.
He will be sadly missed by many relatives and friends who may visit on Wednesday, July 27 from 1-3 and 6-8 pm at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus or at Good Hope Lutheran Church on Thursday from 10-10:45 am. His funeral service will begin at 11:00 am Thursday in Good Hope Lutheran Church with Pastor Renee Ahern officiating. Private burial will be on a later date in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors by the US Army and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.
Memorial donations are asked to be given to Good Hope Lutheran Steeple Fund or Homecare Matters Hospice through Wise Funeral Service. Memories and photos can be shared on Milt’s Tribute Wall.
