Michael Paul Short, 67, died Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus as result of complications from strep pneumonia.
He was born August 14, 1948 in Mason County, West Virginia a son of Tracy J. Short who preceded him in death and Mildred J. (Franks) Short who resides in Cardington.
Mike was working at North Electric in Galion when he met Judith A. Gobrecht who, at the time, wasn’t interested in him, but his persistent nature paid off and the two were married four months later on April 16, 1966. Mike also spent time working at Cardinal Vending and Swan before hiring in at Timken from where he retired only because of health issues. Being a little bit of an entrepreneur, he owned and operated The Memorial Group, which manufactured grave monuments. He ran this for a while but, being a man of the “Golden Rule,” Mike wanted to help those in need, so he began volunteering much of his time locating food for many area food pantries, particularly New Day Ministries Outreach Center.
Mike enjoyed attending the Bucyrus Nazarene Church when he was able to better get around and he will be remembered for putting the needs of others ahead of his own. He cherished time spent with his family who will miss his surprise doggie licks and lovingly referred to him as the “tackle tester” because he didn’t have the most success at fishing. He loved to tinker with anything and spent many evenings drinking coffee with his Hardee’s and McDonald’s gang through the years.
In addition to his mother and wife, Mike is survived by four sons, Brian (Katie) Short, Scott (Christine) Short, both of Bucyrus, Gregory (Diana) Short of Crestline, and Dale Short of Illinois; eight grandchildren, Tony Short, Jessica Short, Josh Sourwine, Amber (David) Jenkins, Aaron Hensley, Levi Short, Ashley “Nicki” Short, and SSgt. USAF Michael A. (Macey) Short; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Judy Greenawalt of Galion and Christy Short of Cardington as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his dad; three brothers, George, Gordon “Bill”, and Robert “Bob” Short; and one granddaughter, Misty Short.
His family will receive friends from 1-3 and 6-8 pm Friday, January 8 at Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St. in Bucyrus. Mike’s funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Bucyrus Nazarene Church with Pastor Ray LaSalle officiating and burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the New Day Ministries Outreach Center and these gifts can be given through the funeral home. To share a memory, please visit Mike’s Tribute Wall.
