Mary K. Satterthwaite

Mary K. Satterthwaite, 57, of Bucyrus, died early Wednesday, October 30, 2013 in the Wexner Medical Center at OSU following a brief battle with cancer.

She was born October 18, 1956 in Indianapolis, Ind., the daughter of David and Linda (Calvin) Hillman who reside in Henderson, Nev. Mary K. grew up in Bel Air, Md. where she graduated from Bel Air Senior High School in 1975 and went on to complete her Bachelor of Science degree in 1979 from Hood College. She worked as a Marketing and Training Officer for A.P.G Federal Credit Union and Forest Hill State Bank/Mercantile County Bank until retirement when she moved to Bucyrus to be closer to family.

Mary K. grew up addicted to watching Star Trek and her favorite character was William Shatner's Captain Kirk. This love escalated to becoming a Trekker, where she traveled from city to city attending conventions. During a convention in the mid 1980's she struck up a conversation with a fellow Trekker and a few years later, she and S. Cullen Satterthwaite were married on November 7, 1991. They continued their love of Star Trek together, working their way into Guest Relations which they both did for over 10 years.

Mary K. was active in Girl Scouts for 30 years in both Maryland and Ohio. She enjoyed sewing and scrapbooking and was, in fact, gifted enough to have operated her own business while in Maryland called Mary K. Kreations, arranging floral pieces and handling seamstress work for weddings. Faith and volunteering were a big part of her life as well. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bucyrus where she served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and played in the bell choir. Mary K. served on the board of directors at Camp Michael and with Family First of Crawford County. Mary K. kept busy with many things, but when the opportunity did arise, she loved traveling and vacationing in various National Parks throughout the United States, her favorites being in Hawaii and California.

In addition to her parents, Mary K. is survived by her husband and best friend, Cullen Satterthwaite; two children, Samuel and Leira Satterthwaite, living at home; one sister, Jane (Hillman) Richardson and husband Phillip of Bucyrus; three nephews, P.J. Richardson of North Carolina, Robert (Sheraton) Richardson and Keith Richardson, both of Bucyrus. She is reunited in Heaven with her beloved nephew, David Richardson.

Her family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 5 at Wise Funeral Service. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Cory officiating.

Contributions may be given to Cullen Satterthwaite through the funeral home.
