Martha Hocker

Martha Grace Hocker, 96, of Galion died peacefully on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Galion Pointe Nursing Home where she had lived for 10 years.

She was born December 30, 1918 in Martel to the late John and Amanda (Wise) Beach. Martha grew up on a family farm and went to Whetstone High School where she played basketball and graduated in 1936. She worked for Stratbury Manufacturing in Galion and married Lewis E. Hocker on October 6, 1946. Lewis preceded her in death March 9, 2010.

Martha was the classic homemaker and mother and will be remembered for her sense of humor, meat and potatoes and pecan pie. She was active in the former New Winchester EUB Church where she was in the Ladies Aid and played piano along with the area Mothers’ Club. After her children grew up, she worked for Lazarus where she retired as supervisor of the gift wrapping department. She and Lewis enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and bowling in the Senior League at Suburban Lanes. She also enjoyed musicals, plays and a number of bus trips over the years. Martha was a big fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and was pleased to hear of their recent football National Championship.

Martha is survived by three children, Jacquelyn Hocker and husband Roberto of Galion, Janis Hocker of St. Clair, Pa. and Jerry Hocker and wife Christine of Orient, Ohio; four grandchildren, Brennen Hocker, Jaimi (Ryan) Lauer, Jeremy Hocker and Antonio Joaquin Casaus; four great grandchildren, Morgan, Isiah, Ruby and Emma and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband of 63 years, Martha was preceded in death by her brother, Clair Beach and sisters, Florence Holland, Carol Frost and Aldine Young.

Martha’s family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 27 from 4-7 pm at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus where her funeral will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 am with Rev. Darrin Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
