Margaret M. "Snook" Barstow, 85 of Bucyrus, died Tuesday evening, November 27, 2012 at her residence surrounded by family.
She was born April 24, 1927 in Jamestown, NY to the late Clifford and Grace (Solinger) Graham. Margaret was a 1944 graduate of Panama High School in Panama, NY and went on to receive her business certificate from Jamestown Business College.
Margaret enjoyed roller skating and one evening while skating in 1946, she met a young gentleman named Harley "Flip" Barstow. The two hit it off and on March 20, 1948 they married. The two spent 54 years together raising a family and traveling all over the world as Harley was career Air Force and Margaret worked secretarial positions at various military bases in addition to caring for her family as a homemaker. They eventually settled down in Bucyrus in 1968 with Harley landing a job as the Executive Director for the Bucyrus Area Chamber of Commerce and she working as a secretary for the State Highway Patrol ten plus years before retiring. Harley preceded her in death on January 6, 2002.
Following retirement, Snook, a nickname given to her early in childhood did not slow down. She was a member of Bucyrus United Methodist Church where she volunteered for many church meals. She served on the Crawford County Humane Society Board of Directors and enjoyed volunteering her time for their various events. Margaret also volunteered time for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, TRIAD, Bucyrus United Way and was a member of the local Moose Lodge where she actively socialized with friends.
Margaret is survived by her two children, Robert H. Barstow and wife Janine of Memphis, Tenn and Shirley J. Schiefer of Bucyrus; four grandchildren, Timothy Barstow of Temple Terrace, FL, Nicole (Bill) Dillon of Utica, NY, Karlie (Cpt. Nick) Salimbene of Columbus, GA and Kerrie Schiefer of Columbus, Ohio; three great grandchildren, Kyle, Ashley and Anna Dillon; two brothers, Ed Graham of Sherman, NY and Clifford (Linda) Graham of Sarasota, FL; two sisters, Betty (Dick) Stevens of Brandon, FL and Grace Kent of Sherman, NY and a caring and compassionate man who has filled a void in her life for the past ten years, Warren Outhwaite, Sr.
Margaret was a lady who enjoyed her daily routine. Whether going to Curves, walking the dog or volunteering her time, Margaret enjoyed having a purpose in life. She and Warren liked attending shows in Marion and Columbus when the opportunity arose and she looked forward to phone conversations and visits with her family. Margaret has left her mark in many communities throughout her life with all she has given and will be missed by many.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Friday, November 30 at Wise Funeral Service. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Bucyrus UMC (corner of Warren and Walnut St.) with Pastor Warren Outhwaite, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Humane Society serving Crawford County through the funeral home.
