Mabel I. Burk, 93, of Bucyrus died Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at Altercare of Bucyrus after several weeks of recent illness.
She was born in Akron August 26, 1919 to the late Amos and Ida (Datwyler) Yost. The Yost family moved to Bucyrus when Mabel was an infant. She graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1937 and began working at Swan Rubber. It wasn't long before a young man named Bob Burk began chasing her. She thought he would go away if she said yes, but instead they were married on October 24, 1942. A few months later, Robert was drafted into the US Army and they lived at various posts until their return to Bucyrus after his discharge.
Mabel is survived by two sons, William (Jan) Burk of Angola, Ind. and David Burk of Bucyrus; three grandchildren, Andy (Sarah) Burk, Lindsay Burk and Shawn (Kristen) Burk; step-grandchildren, Chris, Allen, Megan and Joe; great grandchildren, Lux, Alexis, Allanah, Paige and Jude; one sister, Edith McIntire of Apopka, Fla., sister-in-law, Betty Burk of Rock Island, Ill. and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Robert Burk; son, Gary Burk; brothers, Ralph and Clyde Yost and sisters, Hazel Korb and Martha Stiefel.
Mabel was known by her faith in God and love of family. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bucyrus where she helped quilt and used to teach Sunday School. She liked to keep busy baking, cooking, canning and sewing, especially doll clothes for her nieces since she had no daughters. She also enjoyed yard work and flowers, always grabbing a fist full of weeds when she came across any. She enjoyed losing herself in a good book and in earlier years, socializing with friends at veterans' clubs. Mabel was a longtime member of American Legion Post 181 Auxiliary. She was a life member and former kitchen manager at the Conservation League. Mabel will be remembered for being well loved and loving well.
The Burk family will receive friends Thursday, May 23 from 4-7 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service where her funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Don L. Neumann officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be given to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or Homecare Matters Hospice through the funeral home. Memories may be shared on Mabel's obituary page at www.wisefuneral.com.
