Lawrence "Bud" Hall

Lawrence H. "Bud" Hall, 92, of Bucyrus died Thursday, April 12, 2012 at Bucyrus Community Hospital following a recent illness.

He was born November 30, 1919 in Bucyrus to the late William and Pauline (Staiger) Hall. Bud attended school at Holmes-Liberty and North Robinson before graduating from Whetstone High School in 1937 where he played a number of sports. He enjoyed growing up on the farm caring for hogs. He married the love of his life, the former Martha Dinkel, on February 25, 1945, caring for her through her battle with Alzheimers until she preceded him in death November 8, 2004 after nearly 60 years of marriage.

Bud worked for Fischer Hardware and Bucyrus Kettle Works before accepting the call to serve his country in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1941-1945. He was a Staff Sergeant in charge of crews installing aircraft radar equipment at various bases and serviced P-38 fighter planes for the 5th Air Force Group. He had the privilege of working with Charles Lindbergh, among others.

After his discharge, Bud was certified in air conditioning and heating at Boston Technical School in Cleveland. He started Hall Heating & Cooling on July 17, 1947 and retired in 1985 after 37 years. He was proud to have built a business from the ground up that still serves the needs of the Bucyrus area families today.

Bud will be remembered as a committed man who loved his family, friends and community, liked food and enjoyed life. He looked forward to arriving early at family, school and military reunions. He was a member of the Conservation League, VFW Post 1078, Bucyrus Lodge F&AM, Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo Shriners, Past-Commander of American Legion Post 181 and he worshiped his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at St. John's United Church of Christ. He loved sports, playing baseball, basketball and softball in adult leagues and coaching Little League. An avid outdoorsman, Bud enjoyed spending time with family and friends, Ohio State games, Cleveland Indians and Browns, fishing at Lake Erie, hunting wildlife and frying fish and bratwurst at church and Legion meals. In recent years, he looked forward to his daily meetings with the Rusty Zipper Club and supporting the Bucyrus Historical Society and Bucyrus Public Library. He will be missed at area festivals and Hobo Days where he played his beloved Hurdy Gurdy Grind Organ.

Bud is survived by his children, Judith (Fred) Freeman of Monroe, Mich. and Jeff (Martha) Hall of Fremont; grandchildren, Laura (Ryan) Bick, Shannon Hall and Stacy (Brian) Miller; great grandchildren, Aaron and Kaylee Bick; sisters, Betty (Ron) Eich of Crestline and Pat (Dale) Smith of Bucyrus; brother, Larry (Sally) Hall of Bucyrus; several nieces and nephews and his companion of seven years, Aurelia Brombacher. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by sisters, Marian Sabo, Selma Nicholson and Marjorie Krupka.

The Hall family will receive friends Sunday, April 15 from 1-4 p.m. at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. The funeral will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. in St. John's UCC with Rev. Steven E. Voelker officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery with military rites provided by the U.S. Army and American Legion Honor Guards. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John's UCC, the Honor Flight Network or a charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home.
