Larry E. Schiefer, 73, of Bucyrus died on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 while resting peacefully under the care of Zusman Hospice at the Ross Heart Hospital in Columbus after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born August 9, 1941 in Bucyrus to the late Charles and Helen Jane (Ackerman) Schiefer. Larry went to Holmes-Liberty High School where he was active in FFA, earning his State Farmer Degree, and involved in the local and state Key Club. He was a member of the 1957 state runner-up basketball team and it was at a basketball game where he sat next to a beautiful classmate named Janet Schifer and that’s all it took. They graduated in 1959 and were married September 4, 1960.
Larry went on to Ohio State, graduating in 1964 with his education degree. He retired from teaching after 30 years, first in Columbus before returning to Crawford County and teaching business and accounting at Wynford. He also served as senior class advisor, WEA President and SADD advisor. He and his brother maintained the family farm after their father’s untimely death when Larry was 13 and he continued to farm through retirement. He was a 4-H advisor, Past President of Crawford County Farm Bureau, served on the board of Crawford Landmark and Country Star Co-op, associate member of Crawford County Cattleman’s Association and 2013 Crawford County Cattleman’s Beef Industry Award recipient. After retiring from teaching, Larry founded Schiefer Insurance Services which is now operated by his children. He was a member of the Wynford Athletic Hall of Fame, a Mason, former member of Bucyrus Twp. VFD and a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church.
Larry will be remembered for many passions, especially his children and grandchildren and his love of teaching and farming. He had a giving nature that was demonstrated through his strong support of community, family and youth programs, especially the Crawford and Wyandot County Junior Fairs. He enjoyed movies and music from the comfort of his La-Z-Boy and lived life to its fullest with his “Lake Family.” He treasured family vacations to many destinations, especially Disney and Canada, and loved the company of his little dog, Rudy.
Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet; children, Jeff (Karla) Schiefer and their children, KaiLee, KarLee and James; Greg (Cindy) Schiefer and their children, Grace, Caitlin and Nathaniel and Jennifer (Bill) Scott and their children, Luke and Allison.
