K. Kaye Light Blum, 64, died peacefully Wednesday night, October 28, 2015 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital after a long and valiant fight with Multiple Myeloma.
Kaye was born in Bucyrus on July 22, 1951, the only child of the late Herbert B. Light and Ruth I. (Geissman) Light who survives along with her precious daughter, Megan Blum. She was baptized and retained her membership in the congregation of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sulphur Springs, and graduated from Col. Crawford High School in 1969 where she played clarinet in the band and enjoyed being a cheerleader.
She moved to Columbus upon graduation where she attended Nationwide Beauty Academy and then worked for Union Department Store Salons for seven years. She co-owned and operated JB’s Drive-In in Lexington where she was able to foster her passion for cooking and service. She then worked for Hallmark for 15 years, both at Penn Hallmark in Mansfield and as owner of Kaye’s Hallmark in Ashland. In 1981, Kaye’s mother bought her a Longaberger Basket. This led to a passion and livelihood of nearly 35 years, selling and collecting baskets and serving as manager of a team that grew to over 200 and fostering lifelong friendships with many including Tami Longaberger and the late David Longaberger.
Kaye will be remembered as an avid collector and selfless mom, daughter and friend who lived by the Golden Rule with integrity and compassion. She and her daughter were true “foodies” going out of their way to markets in big cities to seek out obscure ingredients for their next cooking venture and staying glued to the Food Network on TV.
In 1998, Kaye was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and given a three year prognosis. She endured treatment with dignity and fought with tremendous stamina, working hard in her businesses and with the love her family all through it. Another collection of acorns, the Multiple Myeloma symbol, was taken up and she did all she could to spread awareness and offer hope for the generations behind her.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 6, 2015 at 1:30 pm at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 4707 Ridgeton Road in Sulphur Springs with Pastor Hans Scherner officiating. Friends may call at the church from 12:30 until the service begins. Her burial in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery will conclude the service.
Those wishing to make donations are asked to give to the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery Fund through Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820. Memories are encouraged on Kaye’s Tribute Wall.
