Kate Hardesty

Katherine Elizabeth Hardesty, 83, of Bucyrus died peacefully Sunday morning, February 2, 2014 at Fairhaven Community in Upper Sandusky where she had resided in recent months.

She was born February 14, 1930 in Galion to the late Carl and Leona (Durtschi) Bercaw, Sr. She graduated from Galion High School and was Vice President of the Class of 1948. Kate worked at North Electric and Galion Dresser before retiring and taking up child care at her home in Bucyrus.

Kate married Gene Hardesty on August 21, 1982. They enjoyed traveling together in their motor home, visiting a number of states and joining fellow Good-Sam campers at Samborees throughout Ohio. She was known to speak her mind, was always on the lookout for a gullible victim of one of her practical jokes and loved to have a great time playing cards, especially Euchre and Poker. She was a member of the Women of the Moose #669 and the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 181. A woman of faith, Kate was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church and read her Bible every morning. Over the years she also volunteered to read in local schools and help with worthy causes including Relay for Life and Special Olympics.

Kate is survived by her husband, Gene; children, Linda (John) Beal of Steam Corners, Ohio and Tom (Linda) Harbaugh of Ontario; stepchildren, Bob (Bob Taylor) Hardesty of Massachusetts, Connie (Tom) McCool of Attica and Don (Melissa) Hardesty of Bucyrus; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and her sister, Jean (Bob) Carlton of Carlisle, Pa.

In addition to her parents, Kate was preceded in death by brothers, John Bercaw and Carl Bercaw, Jr.; sister, Dorothy Snyder and one granddaughter.

No public services will be held for Kate. Those wishing to make memorial donations may do so to Woodlawn UMC or a charity of the donor’s choice through Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820. Memories are encouraged the Memorial Guestbook below.
