John D. Spaid, 56, died Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at Riverside Methodist Hospital of complications from recently discovered heart issues.
He was born in Bucyrus on October 6, 1967 to the late John F. and Sharon K. (Sheaffer) Spaid. After his mother’s untimely death, he was warmly welcomed by his loving stepmother, Barbara (Sparr) Spaid, who survives. John graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1987 where he was active in the marching band. He enlisted in the US Navy that summer and served eight years during the Gulf War as a diesel mechanic. He never missed work and was proud to have become a machinist, just like his father. He worked for G.E., Whirlpool, and currently for The Timken Co.
John will be remembered for his generosity and his orneriness. He would give anything he could to help someone out. He was ornery from birth and enjoyed pulling off a great practical joke or teasing those he loved the most. John was an avid gun and 2nd Amendment rights enthusiast and was a great cook who would often be found smoking meat or whipping up his spinach dip. In addition to shooting and cooking, John was an avid Ohio State fan, bowled and shot darts in years past, and loved sharing time with his family, especially the youngsters. He took them to the cemetery each spring to plant flowers and honor their ancestors. John was also a classic rock enthusiast who collected t-shirts from the countless concerts he attended with Alice Cooper shows being his favorite.
John is survived by his sister, Jennifer (Mark) Gerger; brothers, Roderick (Suzanne) Hawkins and Neal (Carrie) Hawkins; stepmother, Barbara Spaid; nieces and nephews, Jessica (Tyler) Furry, Bryant Gerger (Sydney Clark), Ryan Hawkins, Mason Croft, Tyler Croft, Elizabeth Hawkins, Kayla Hawkins, and Riley Hawkins; and great niece and nephews, Adelynn, Collin, and Brock.
Services will be held on Sunday, December 17 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus. Family will receive friends from 1-3:55 pm and the funeral will begin at 4:00 pm with Pastor Sean McLeod officiating. A private interment in Oakwood Cemetery will later occur with military rites by the US Navy Honor Guard and Bucyrus Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
Donations in John’s memory can be made payable to a charity of the donor’s choice and given through the funeral home. Memories and photos can be shared in the guestbook.
