John Michael Slate

John Michael Slate, 57, died late Sunday, June 7, 2020 at Bucyrus Community Hospital. He had been a resident of Heartland of Bucyrus for two years after several health issues.



He was born March 20, 1963 in Bucyrus to the late John D. and Minnie M. (Sawyer) Slate. Mike graduated from Bucyrus High School in 1981 and studied Auto Services at Pioneer JVS. He then enlisted in the US Marine Corps and proudly served in Parris Island, South Carolina, Japan, and Camp Pendleton, California before his honorable discharge in 1984. He worked for Baja Marine until its closure and then began driving truck routes all over the east coast.



Outside of work, Mike enjoyed gaming and television at home. His favorite game was Diablo 3 and he liked watching American Pickers. He was also a big sports fan, especially Ohio State and NASCAR. Mike was a former member of the Moose Lodge and enjoyed visits with his family.



Mike is survived by children, Misty (Carl) Weisenauer, Justin Slate, and Andy (Danielle) Stinehelfer; grandchildren, Cherokee, Kassandra, Garry, and Serenity; sister, Susan Rothhaar; niece, Kylene (Eric) Stander and daughter Whitley; and nephew, Logan Rothhaar.



Mike was laid to rest privately in Crawford County Memory Gardens with military honors by the Marine Corps Honor Guard. The family welcomes friends to celebrate Mike’s life on Saturday, July 12 from 1-3 pm at the Whetsone Twp. Hall, 1820 S.R. 19, Bucyrus.
