Joe Klingenberger

Joe Klingenberger, 67, of Bucyrus, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Marion General Hospital.

Joe was born August 13, 1944 in Bucyrus to the late George and Bertha (Sheibley) Klingenberger and attended school at Bucyrus High School before serving in the U.S. Navy from 1961-65. On August 18, 1967 Joe married Cheryl J. Durbin who survives.

Joe is also survived by a daughter & son-in-law, Jo Ann and Jason Statser and grandchildren, Brett Statser & his fiancée Kristin and Tyler Statser, all of Atoka, Tenn.; brothers, Charles (Audrey) Klingenberger and Frank (Gloria) Klingenberger, both of Bucyrus; two nephews, Jeff Klingenberger and Andy Klingenberger, also of Bucyrus; mother and father-in-law, Mary Lu and Eugene Durbin of Apple Valley and brothers and sisters-in-law, Deb (Bob) Dairy, Doug Durbin, Bruce Durbin and Anita (Rick) Ridenour. Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Catherine Klingenberger, who died at a young age.

Joe was able to use his boiler training from the Navy in his work as a Stationary Engineer at Bucyrus Community Hospital from which he retired after 20 years of employment. Joe loved running and was proud to have been sponsored by Reebok as one of the top Master Runners in the state of Ohio as well as the United States. He shared his love of running with many youth whom he mentored and also coached on the Bucyrus Track team for over 30 years. Joe was crushed when he could no longer run due to his cancer, but he had golf to fall back on which, later in life, gave him great joy. He always loved his daily afternoon golf with the usual group of guys or playing in various scrambles.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Bucyrus Elks Lodge. Joe enjoyed hanging out with the gang at Sam's, was a big Buckeye fan, enjoyed feeding the birds in his backyard and relaxed by watching Clint Eastwood movies.

Friends may call from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. Sunday, July 15 at Wise Funeral Service. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Fr. John Miller as Celebrant. Fellow runners will lead the procession to Oakwood Cemetery where full military rites will be provided by the U.S. Navy and American Legion Honor Guards.
