Jean Ellen Zahn, 86, of Bucyrus died unexpectedly Saturday morning, June 4, 2016 at the Bucyrus Community Hospital ER from complications of a recent stroke.
She was born is Sulphur Springs on October 12, 1929 to the late Isaac “Ike” and Kathryn (Myers) Cheesman. She graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 1947 where she was in Girls’ Reserve, Choir, and Orchestra, playing violin and drums. She was introduced to Richard Zahn, a recently returned soldier, at the Sandwich Shoppe by a friend working there. They connected and on October 15, 1949 she and Dick were married, sharing over 64 years until his death April 13, 2014.
Jean worked for a few years at the power company before having her son, then began her career at AAA when he began school. She loved her work as a travel agent, sharing many group trips and helping people plan their vacations. She retired as assistant manager. If there was one thing Jean was, it was a helper and caretaker. Others were always taken care of first, not only in her work but in her family and with friends and neighbors. She had a deep and abiding faith in God and His plan and worshiped with St. John’s UCC where she was active in the Women’s Guild and choir over the years.
When grandchildren and great grandchildren came along, she became consumed. “Emaw” could be seen at nearly every activity whether sports, plays, or music. She also loved attending Crawford County Community Concerts and eating out in recent years, seldom missing breakfast with friends at Bob Evans or enjoying other eateries over lunch and dinner. Her family looked forward to annual holiday trips to Frankenmuth and gathering at her house Christmas morning. Every conversation with Jean was memorable and she truly cared about every person with whom she spoke.
Jean is survived by her son, Mike (Sharon) Zahn of Bucyrus; two grandchildren, Kirsten (Brad) Jordan of Marion and Nathan (Chaya) Zahn of Arlington, Virginia; three great grandchildren, Olivia, Kathryn and Colin Jordan; two brothers, Lou (Mary Kay) Cheesman of Fort Mitchell, Kentucky and Glenn (Marsha) Cheesman of Galion; aunt, Betty Myers-Louis of Kansas City; and several dear friends.
Friends may call Wednesday, June 8 at St. John's UCC, 120 S. Lane St., Bucyrus from 10 am-12 Noon at which time the funeral service will be held with Pastor Joe Platt officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to St. John's UCC or the Good Hope Lutheran Church Music Fund through Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus or given the morning of the service. Memories and photos can be shared on Jean's Tribute Wall.
