Janie Martin, 76, died peacefully late Monday, July 5, 2021 at her home under the care of her family and Kindred Hospice after years of declining health.
Clara Jane Martin was born in Galion on March 30, 1945 to the late Joe and Arva (Longacre) McCallister. Sadly, Arva died not long after Janie’s birth. Joe’s brother and sister-in-law, the late Harold and Mollie McCallister, raised Janie in a loving and nurturing home as the youngest of their six children. She grew up in Sulphur Springs and spent all four years of high school in the new Colonel Crawford High School, graduating in 1964. She met a young man from Galion by the name of William Martin and they were married April 15, 1967, sharing 54 years of love, life, and laughter. In addition to being an excellent mom and homemaker, Janie worked in the GE Bucyrus Lamp Plant for 32 years. She was a longtime member of the former St. John Lutheran Church in Sulphur Springs and was affiliated with the Loyal Order of the Moose, Eagles, American Legion, and BPOE Elks in both Ohio and Florida.
Janie’s family brought her the most joy over the course of her life. She was an avid supporter at their athletic and school events, and she loved calling to tell them about her latest “lucky” windfall whether it was at BINGO, Pull-Tabs, or a stroke of luck at a slot machine. Janie and Bill enjoyed 14 winters in the warmth of Bradenton, Florida and she looked forward to the breeze in her hair while driving several favorite convertibles over the years. Janie was an avid golfer and watched a lot of golf and tennis on television. She was a faithful viewer of soap operas and game shows and watched a lot of westerns over the past year. While raising their family, Janie and Bill kept a huge garden from which beautiful flower baskets were arranged along with a lot of canned vegetables and delicious jellies.
Janie is survived by her husband and wonderful caretaker, Bill Martin; children, Todd (Heather) Martin, Candee (Steve) Hall, and Angie (Travis) Hardy; grandchildren, Clay Martin, Brody Martin, Abby Martin, Tyler (Lydia) Hall, Tucker Hall, Ciara Awbrey, Trenton Hardy, and Olivia Hardy; brother-in-law, Warren Long; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann McCallister, Mary Martin, and Emma Martin; and half-brothers, John McCallister and Ted McCallister.
In addition to her four parents, Janie was preceded in death by sisters, Vivian (Kenneth) Bachtell, Arbutus (Gerald) Ruhl, and Violet Long; brothers, Charles “Mick” McCallister and Floyd McCallister; and three brothers-in-law, Bern, Fran, and Dave Martin.
Janie’s family will hold a private farewell. Although no public services will be held, you can remember her with a donation payable to Kindred Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice. These gifts can be given at Wise Funeral Service, 129 W. Warren St., Bucyrus, Ohio 44820.
Memories and photos can be shared on Janie’s Tribute Wall.
