Janie Mae Tudor, 81, of Bucyrus died Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at Maplecrest Assisted Living where she has lived in recent weeks.
She was born February 13, 1932 in Wilmot, Ark. to the late Franklin and Letha (Warren) Holland. Janie enjoyed growing up on their southern Arkansas farm and getting into mischief with her younger brother, Don. This is where she also fell in love with reading, climbing up her favorite tree to relax on a large branch and immerse herself in a good book. After graduating from Wilmot High School, she enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where she worked as a stenographer.
In Ogden, Utah, aboard a train bound for California, a Master Sergeant introduced Janie to a young Airman from Springfield, Ohio named Thomas Tudor. That evening they had their first squabble over whether or not women were suited for military service. They later learned they were both bound for Japan and kept in touch even while stationed apart. After her discharge, Tom and Janie were married in Japan on September 1, 1953. They enjoyed years of spirited debate and Janie said she never stopped laughing over nearly 58 years of marriage before his death July 20, 2011.
Janie is survived by two children, Gela Tudor of Delaware and Don (Dawn) Tudor of Bucyrus and two granddaughters, Mandy Tudor and her husband, Adrian Magers of Erlanger, Ky. and Jaime Tudor of Dublin.
In addition to her parents and husband, Janie was preceded in death by her siblings, Hazel Franklin, Frankie Hagwood, Don Holland and Larry Holland.
Janie will be remembered as strong, opinionated lady with a helping heart and love for family. After settling in Galion, she was in the mother's club and a faithful volunteer at St. Joseph's school. She also was a Girl Scout leader and camp worker. When her kids were raised, she worked for a time at Walden Books and Fisher Printing before relocating to North Carolina where she was able to golf more often and even got Tom reacquainted with the game. They enjoyed drives and watching birds and other critters, but nothing compared to her voracious love of reading.
Funeral services for Janie will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 31 at Wise Funeral Service in Bucyrus where family will receive friends one hour prior from 10-11. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery where military rites will be provided by U.S. Air Force and American Legion Post 181 Honor Guards.
