Janet Lucille Spreng

Janet Lucille Kiess Spreng passed away on September 8, 2011 at the age of 89. She was born in Bucyrus on September 25, 1921, the daughter of the late Harvey and Ida Sherrard Kiess. She was preceded in death in 2006 by her husband of 60 years, John O. Spreng, Sr. Also preceding her in death were her siblings, Helen (James) Kurtz, Dr. John (Lucy) Kiess and Florence (William) Vorlicky. She is survived by two sons, John (Suzann) Spreng, Jr. of Bucyrus and James (Valerie) Spreng, also of Bucyrus. She has one grandchild, Anne (Joe) Cole of Bucyrus and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews and great grandnieces and nephews.

Janet was a 1939 graduate of Bucyrus High School and 1943 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University. She was a teacher beginning her career in Sandusky, Aniston, Ala., and Bucyrus before finishing her career at Colonel Crawford. She taught elementary students before initiating the remedial reading program at Colonel Crawford in which she taught for the final 20 years of her career. Always a teacher, she took great delight in reciting stories of the numerous students of hers who at one time had struggled with their reading, only to go on to great success in their careers; several even becoming medical doctors or with their doctorate degrees.

Always active in support of her community, Janet was a life-long member of Grace United Methodist Church, Bucyrus Community Hospital Twig #1, North Robinson Homemakers, Southside Reading Circle, Clionian Club, New Era Club, American Association of University Women, Crawford County Genealogical Society, Delta Kappa Gamma, Chi Omega, Friends of the Library, Salvation Army Board and Crawford County Retired Teachers.

Calling hours will be at Wise Funeral Service on Sunday, September 11 from 2-6 p.m. and funeral services will be at Bucyrus United Methodist Church, North Campus (First UMC) on Monday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Paul Mutchler officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Colonel Crawford Education Foundation, Bucyrus United Methodist Church or an organization or charity of the donor's choice through Wise Funeral Service.
